Front wheel play

Is it normal to have slight play on the front wheel spindle with a setup like on a 318 or any number of other similar JD GT's? It's a simple affair with some snap rings, 2 sets of bearings and some washers. I'd guess slight play is normal but am wondering what others have seen? If it's supposed to be tight, I need to do some front end work on mine ...
