I have a 1963 Ford 4000 4 cylinder 172 cubic-inch gasoline engine with a Five-speed transmission with live PTO. I have had this tractor for about 4 years. I was mowing with it at the end of the mowing season and everything was fine until I got into a corner and needed to back up. I pushed in on the clutch, put it in reverse, and when I started letting out the clutch it started grinding like it wasn't in gear all the way. I pushed in the clutch and made sure it was in reverse and let out the clutch again and it started grinding again. I went ahead and let the clutch out all the way and everything engaged as it should, the grinding stopped and the tractor was backing up. I backed up all the way to the barn and just backed it in and parked it. I have tried it several times since then, and it always does the same thing (no matter what gear it is in) it grinds as I let the clutch out, but if I release the clutch all the way, it stops grinding and then proceeds forward as normal. It has plenty of pull and the clutch does not slip or anything.
Anyone have a clue what the problem could be or how to troubleshoot the problem??? I am at a loss!
Thanks,
OldFatGuy
