This is really dumb but I want to make sure I'm not going crazy. What is the shift pattern on a 3cyl diesel/6spd Ford 2000? The right lever when forward is low and backwards it high. The left lever is in an L pattern. If you pull it back it is reverse but then it gets weird. If I put in the center of the 3 forward speeds it just creeps along but it goes faster to the left and right. Is 1st in the center or is something FUBAR'd?

Center has always been Neutral on everything I owned. I would say FUBARed. Possibly a bent shift fork.

Ebay also has a Ford 2000 shift pattern decal for an 8 speed transmission. Is it possible you have an 8 speed transmission with one gear not functional??
No idea if its an 8. My only forward speeds are all forward with the shifter and there are 3 of them. Could be messed up but its been messed up since I started running the tractor.

post the model id code from the trans bellhousing, aft of the starter.

I'll have to post that up tomorrow. I won't be able to make it over to the barn until tomorrow morning when I go to fix the muffler and grease the machine up. I'll also figure out exactly what way 2/3 seem to be.

Thanks for posting up about ebay! I just went and looked for those decals. Did find a bit out just looking at those. First off, you can tell I'm a newb with the older tractors because I thought 1/2/3 were all in low with either trans. I guess I have an 8 speed looking at those shift patterns though. I have to have a messed up shift fork or something because I get 3 forward speeds all forward and reverse is just below 1st/5th. Its not down in the center, its down all the way to the left. I know this is really confusing in writing but I'll take a video of it tomorrow and post. The second thing I learned was that my PTO speed is at 1800rpm. I've been cutting at ~1900rpm because it wasn't marked anywhere for 540.

*Edit* There was never a ******* 6spd in these tractors for a year or by some outside company was there? I just ask because it seems to shift just fine. Don't have to force anything and its not sloppy either.

If you have 3 gears across the top row.. i'd say you have to have an 8spd... i don't think your pto rpm is a big issue.. I cut between 1600 and 1900 rpm on my 5000 depending on the conditions.

I don't think me cutting is an issue either. Was just curious on what 540 was on the 2000. Its about 1900rpm on my 1220 so thats where I was running it on the 2000. I'd assume I have an 8spd too if I have 3 across the top. Like I said, I'll take a video and post up showing the shift pattern.

Ok, I went to the barn to see about this whole situation today. I'm more confused than ever. The middle gear is definantly the slowest. The video was taken at idle but I went through all the gears in high and low. Speed wise, it still seems like its 213 BUT in the video you will see my new discovery. I played around a bit, changed the trans fluid, and played around a bit more. Its really seeming like 213 up top and RR down low. Just watch.....

These are the markings I found in the general area you told me to look.

Just behind the starter

You have a Messed up 8 Speed Tranny. Your going to have to get a service manual for that thing and you might see the problem if you pull that top cover.
I'm thinking Shift fork or something along those lines.

I think at this point the job is above my head. I'm a car guy and love tinkering with tractors but its a new hobby. As dumb as it sounds I'm lost for the most part on the easy stuff. I can completely wipe out my computer on my car and reprogram it manually, but a 38 year old tractor dumbfounds me! :ROF

Maybe I can get someone on the board from the area to come help me.

AHH.. new piece of info!.. FFF and back is RR, and then you have a 2-spd range selector.

makes sense now...

6/4 manual reversing tranny!

Last letter in the model ID will be a 'K' for the 6/4 manual reverser.

Outstanding piece of work! So this is a 6 speed forward and a 4 speed reverse transmission?? Must be designed for a tractor that does a lot of reversing??

Reminds me of the transmission designed for a French tank - one speed forward and 10 reverse!! Designed for a purpose!!

You're a god among men! You guys thought I was crazy but I knew I wasn't. Only took a video to show you! Is this a rare trans?

I never seen a transmission like that or even heard of one. I just buy tractors because I need them and sometimes work with them and repair when needed.

Family and employees mainly run my equipment on my farms, but I myself do all my strip sprays on a Ford 8N.
