Instead of kindling, I save all the scraps and splinters from splitting....I just got a garbage can and put it that with the lid on it to keep it dry and I use one piece of Fat Wood .....and throw a handful or 2 of the scraps on and it lights right up...I am ususally burning firewood that has been drying for almost 2 years, so that helps
A very long time ago, I read about making your own fire starters, especially for emergencies or while camping when the wood might be damp.
  • Roll a newspaper
  • Tie it with heavy string about every 6”.
  • Cut between the strings with a hacksaw.
  • Melt candles in a medium to large metal can.
  • Heat the can melting all the candles.
  • Drop in the cut/tied paper.
  • Let them soak quite a while.
  • Remove them to cool.
  • Then use. The strings help start them.

Make sure the scraps are real dry before putting the lid on. I did that once and got a moldy mess.

Funny, I was going to mention dryer lint!

I know the Morgans are trying to sell the stuff, but it would have been nice if they showed the process. If they're worried about a competitor stealing their idea, don't worry, those corporate scientists will figure it out once it becomes a big enough seller.

Mike
I just watched the latest "Outdoors With the Morgans" video today @mikeinri, and it made me think of you! In this video he goes over all of his equipment, and at the end of the video (at the 25:24 mark) he starts discussing his firewood starter. He was JUST ABOUT to tell how he makes it etc, and his freaking battery died!!!! I'd bet money that when the next one comes out, in the next day or two, that he'll get back to that and finish his thought/explanation. I'm sure hoping so anyway, because the stuff I want to make will be an exact copy of his. If in fact he does tell how he makes it.

Haven't "processed" anything in a couple of weeks, but we've been steadily burning in the woodstove. The boys reloaded the garage rack, emptying our smaller outdoor rack in the process.

I'm going to need to replace the pallets before reloading.

Now my buddy wants to bring the last load over in big chunks that need bucked.
No, I still don't have my tractor back to move them and split the big stuff up yet. They got the wrong bearing. Who knows how long now.........

Bummer. Can you let the next load sit until your tractor is fixed, or do you need it for heat?

We are still heating with the wood stove.
I guess it's going to be a wedge and a sledge hammer to get the rest split.

Well, I'm not processing, and probably won't be for a few weeks with all of the snow we've had, and are about to get. But the wife had been telling me that I was supposed to get a Christmas gift from her that she ordered a long time ago. It never did come in time for Christmas. It just came this morning apparently (I'm not home to know when it came for sure). She didn't realize when she ordered it that it came from Vietnam, and sat in customs for awhile lol. I LOVE it though. Worth the wait to me! :)

For sure, I am a Stihl fanboy, but I have diversified my portfolio. Now I have a 20v Dewalt, MS260, MS362, Dolmar PS7900, and an old Homelite 1050 Super. The MS260 is probably my favorite since it is so light and capable, but the Dolmar is so powerful for it's weight that it is hard not to love. I have barely run the Homlite, but I like to compare it to a Chevelle SS 454. It's big, heavy, makes cool sounds and gets exciting when you give it full throttle. A MS661 or 495XP are next on my want list, and I would buy a used one if I could find a decent deal locally.

I found a few of those mugs on ebay, and they were $35-40 with shipping. As cool as they are, I don't need one that badly.

I feel the same way about wanting a 500i. I also feel the same as you about my 260 Pro. Just good saws. And I'm actually able to tune that saw. But I do feel that people bum-wrap the Mtronic saws. The second iteration have been very reliable, and I have yet to have a problem with mine.

Ya, I don't know how much that mug was.....25.00 maybe? I'd probably pay that much for a mug that I really liked, even though it IS too expensive.

FWIW, I have a Husqvarna saw, a Remington (electric) saw, an Echo backpack blower, and a Stihl Kombi system (trimmer, pole saw, etc.). So, I'm kind of all over the place, I guess...

Nothing but Craftsman tractors, though.

Mike

Edited to add the Stihl Kombi pole saw attachment!

I'm off topic here, but figured that it would be okay? I'm curious, I'm not home, and the wife had propane delivered today. She took a picture of the receipt and sent it to me. I can't figure out what the orange circled area means........"volume corrected to 60". Any ideas?

I believe this was our 3rd fill of the Winter. And I've got two tanks. One for the garage/shop and one for the house. Since the heat is set lower in the shop except when I'm out there, it doesn't go through as much. But I think I've had the shop one filled twice this year. Didn't have it filled this time because it was still at 60%, and that should be plenty to get me in to Spring.

We to normally fill 3 times a year for the house. We are still on our first tank. It's at 20% right now and I should refill in case of that one last cold spell but...............
As for the garage 20 mins with the bullet heater and she's warm.
