Just failed emmisions on 1987 Ford Ln 9000 L10 , 14 liter. Tomorrow I'm goung to check air filter, change both oil filters, fuel filter, and water filter. Hopefully that does it perhaps let it be more warmed up before testing open it up a little. Any other advice for a smoky diesel?

Thanks GS!

Warm it up to normal operating temp for sure!
Sell it in Virginia, where we do not know what an emissions test is! :dunno:

I like the air and fuel filter ideas, when was the oil last changed? :fing32:
I'd add some Power Service "Kleener" or Howes Lubricator to the fuel,it'll help clean the injectors up and you'll have a better shot at passing next time--get it good and hot too, thats important..

When I had big block chevys I always flunked the emission test if I ended up having to wait in line at the inspection place..if I got in there right away after a good blast down the highway, they passed with flying colors..

I hope they dont increase emission testing of diesel pickups here--as of now its "random" and if your lucky, you wont be the one chosen to have your tailpipe sniffed..
(hmmm...that dont sound quite right,does it?)..

Most places anymor,e dont even do a tailpipe test ,the plug into the diagnostic port and read the sensors...
Maybe thats why my '82 GMC with a 6.2 didn't get an emission test this year--no place to plug the computer into it!..:D..

About 3-4 years ago I went to get a sticker and the place said it "was selected to have a random emission test"..I told the guy go ahead and try it,see if it'll pass..but his tailpipe probe wouldn't reach the tailpipe,so he moved the truck and had to re-start the tester..then it said "safety only",and he just checked the horn, lights and wipers, and said :HUH?..two other diesel pickups I did this morning had to have the emission test, and the machine wouldn't "re-set"..maybe I was just lucky..

They haven't said boo about emission testing on it the last 2 years so maybe it only applies to the newer year trucks now with the OBD2 doagnostics?...I haven't seen a tailpipe probe in quite a while, now that I think of it...

We used to have a dynomometer test for emissions here, they litteraly strapped your vehicle down and spun a giant roller in the floor ,for a "simulated road test"..it broke quite a few cars axles and CV joints if done incorrectly,a few cars also look off like a rocket when the straps came off or the dyno wheel stopped suddenly too..glad they ditched that stupid idea!..

Haha you must be in the part of VA that doesn't totally suck. We're in Loudoun County and we've gotta do emissions every two years. Loudoun, Fairfax, Prince William and I think a few others have that crap, something about population density.

Anyway I've had good luck with BG 44k before emissions tests if I'm worried. My fiancé had an older Honda Accord that we rarely drove. We took it in and it failed emissions. The guy at the shop didn't see any glowing issues so he gave us a can of 44k, told us to drive about 60 miles and then come back. We did as he said and the second time around, it passed. The numbers dropped off a decent amount, we were shocked that it worked, but it did.

We'll my first test " Final Opacity Reading" 81 my limit 40.

After all new fuel, coolant, water separator, 2 oil filter and new air
my reading today was 43.

So very close the mechanic owner told me bring it back running 5 to 10 gallons of kerosene. He said" it's like nitrous for diesel's and will pass with flying colors.I know it burns much cleaner I"ll keep you posted. This is not for every day use just a test.!

That engine has a major problem is it's blowing an 81- even the limit of 40% is ridiculous. I had a number of diesel trucks when I had my rental business, and none ever blew over 10%, and these were from the late '80's to mid nineties. Even my 2002 International which had no emission controls would only do 1%.

T-H....1982 is an antique. In Mass, safety check only, no matter if diesel of gasoline.

With my '83 they just make sure that it runs and stops. It doesn't do over 50 miles in a year. Easy $29 for the inspection station.
The truck is a 1987, @ idle very little smoke appears black, under wide open 5 seconds white smoke.

It really doesn't have computers or any of the stuff new trucks have very old school.

I remember those salamander style heaters in construction that run on diesel or kerosene and they run much cleaner on kerosene.

Soon as I use up 50 gallons I"ll retest again and post results. I don't think a new truck would even get a 1 value but I could be wrong.

TH my F-450 got the dyno thing I sat in waiting room waiting to here it blow up he pinned it for 10 seconds 4 times:eek:

I see what's going on. You're talking 'Commercial' sticka testing (in excess of 10,000 pounds GVW and/or having 4 rear wheels). Two different test procedures and criteria.

Then it depends on whose station you are at.
It's been a long time of me trying to burn off a 100 gallons I will soon post the kerosene sniff test hopefully shortly.

Been awhile but I didn't do kerosene I couldn't find it but cycled about 8 tanks of Kleen Diesel. Another trucker said it would work. I did overdose on my test day though I doubled the amount recommended. Seems to run much cleaner.

So yes I recommend this stuff it really helped. Here is my first test result before all fuel and oil changes filters etc including air filter.

This was the best it could do before Kleen Diesel.

Looks good! My truck got 2.3 of the allowed 20% when I did emissions 2 years ago. Last time I did it, about 15k miles later, with a straight pipe and cold air intake it got 1.7. Go figure.
Ours was just the 7 county metro area and that got shut down in 1999. My 300-6 powered F150s often did not pass. I told them I didn't have the $$ to fix any emissions. They gave me a green sticker with no printing on it and said to give it to the liscence place so I could get my tabs.
