I have never run my to30 in the dark before and could not help but notice how the pipe and manifold glowed. I'm talking bright orange. Is this normal? I did just convert to a 6v electronic ignition and trying to smooth it out but it runs for about 3-4 minutes, starts to run rough, sputter, then stop. Can't help but think that it might be vapor locking by boiling the fuel in the line.

That is not normal, unless you are really working it hard. Does it have a temp gauge..?? What is it reading, if it does..?? If it's running in the normal range, a lean setting on the carb. can make them run hot. Being out of time can make them run a little warm too.

If the temp gauge is showing hot, could be a plugged radiator, radiator hose collapsing on the inside restricting flow, or passages in the block plugged.

You can always try the clothes pin trick on the fuel line, and at least see if it runs longer.

Did you ever find a main jet for the carb.??

My apologies for the late response. The manifold and pipe heat up almost immediately and will glow in a minutes time, keeping in mind this is at idle. I had a leak in the radiator and had that cleaned and repaired. It also has new hoses and a new thermostat and the temp gauge runs into the low end of normal. I know I have a carb issue and am trying to figure that out. The float was just a hair to big and was hanging up. It now has the right float and I just need to get the time to look at it. Even with all these fixes, it still makes the exhaust glow. The timing is still set at 6* BTDC.

I was able to locate two kits with the jets and choke poppet spring. Just trying to get over that one kit is $50(wrong main nozzle) or $70.

I have noticed that when I leave the gas off for about a week and the gas evaporates out of the carb, I can hear the air bubble up through the tank when I open the valve. When the carb fills, it will start right up and runs until what seems like the gas runs out, sometimes longer. It will start to spit and sputter and eventually stop running. Sometimes it will start back up, sometimes not.
