the coupling right at the motor
it's painted light blue like the engine
anybody know what it is?

now the red pulley
might be for the hydraulic pump
but the blue coupling in first pic
might have something to do with it

Looks like a gear reduction to me.

would a setup like this
work without the gear reduction?
using 8-10 HP Kohler 241S and
Ford Toploader 3 Speed
checked rotation and
it'll rotate tranny correctly

It's a 6:1 gear reductoin box,factory Briggs equipment...the Kohler engine will work,but if the tractor was designed to be used with 6:1 reduction it'll go too fast with a engine without the reduction,you could use a small pulley on the engine and one 6 times bigger on a jackshaft to slow it down to the same RPM the Briggs used to turn at...why not just get the Briggs running,instead of making so much work for yourself,or get another gear reduction engine??..
