Driveway rock

So we have some new property as of 3 today! We have a 500' right of way. It has some stone as a base. It's the large fist size. But now I need to put some base down. Late this summer/fall I'll end up black topping it. So, my question is: what do I put down now that will act as a good drive way while I work out there, begin to build two houses in the spring and will serve as a base for black top?

We hear use what is called crush and run, 3/4" blue stone with some kind of filler and it works very well. We have lots of hills so about every 4-6 months it has to be scraped back up. My driveway is 200' and after 7 years I just had to lay down another 6 tons and could use some more. Some nut:howdy: planted trees so the big 25 ton truck can no longer make it to the driveway so I have to buy it in smaller loads. Price was $18.50 per ton.

Stone dust is the 'filler' in the 21 A or B (which is crush/run) that you are talking about...the dust , when wet--is what adheres and holds it all together....You want the big stone on the bottom--then the base wil eventually sift down thru it....

Different names in different areas.....:dunno:

I think crush and run maybe my best and/or cheapest option since I have to buy so much. So.......should I put down the fabric? How thick should I lay this batch? 12' a typcial width?
And thank you JBrumberg. The ole 790 did a great job this weekend. Need to get my hands on my father in laws 7' grader blade to really finish it up.
If I remember correctly the woven geotextile material was 15' wide. It was laid as a single sheet with 2' seam overlaps. We pinned it down as it was laid.
Decision time. My choice is #57's at $21.75 a ton or crushed concrete at $16.75 a ton. 57s can be tailgated in meaning alot less work for me. The CC can't. He can do small piles though. I can spread it, but.....

So, not sure what to do. Any thoughts? I'm even thinking about haggling the price down on the CC. Took them a while to get me a price. One concern I have with the CC is it taking more tonnage because of the dust in it.

depending on your soil the rocks are always going to sift down it takes years to build up a good base, but luckily i have shale
I have the base, so this would just be a topping.

Got a lot done today. Had 76.14 tons of #57 limestone delievered. The guy did a great job tailgating it in and then I worked for about an hour evening everything out with the bucket and grader blade. We bought two rolls of the road fabric and I'm glad we did. Those totaled 600' together, could have used another 100 feet, but we're good.
