Diesel Engines

Has anyone repowered their tractor with a diesel engine? What did you put in , a vertical or horizontal shaft, and what brand, Hatz, Yanmar, etc.? Does anybody know alot about diesel replacement engines for Lawn & Garden Tractors? Where do you get them? I ask because if or I need to repower a tractor, I would like a diesel. Especially if I can get my hands on a Sears Suburban a couple miles up the road from me. I just don't know a whole lot about them, other than them being vertical or horizontal shaft and anywhere from 4HP to 25HP. I hope you guys can help me out, I would like to see pictures of tractors thats been repowered with them, different brands, prices, locations to purchase them.

A real nice repower was done to a IH Cub Cadet Original using a Yanmar 9hp. diesel. I dont know how to get the thread over here to ya, but here is the title: Yanmar repower,63 Cub Cadet original WITH PICS . By MTF Member tacosteelersman. Check it out!:thThumbsU
A water cooled engine makes a re-power more difficult.I have a diesel re-powered MF 1655 on the Massey Ferguson section.
I've been toying with this for my Ford LGT120, putting a twin Kubota or Yanmar in it. There is a guy on the 4BT swaps site who put a Kubota triple in a Roper GT16, it was a tight fit and had some overheating issues.
It would be easiest in a tractor with the engine inline, rather than mounted crossways.

It doesn't have to be water cooled. Although water cooled would be nice, it can be air cooled as well.:trink39:
I bought 3 engines from my work place .
This spring one will go into my Sears tractor.

I'd like some info on those engines if possible, including maybe a price.
I got this used Lombardini cheap. Stuck it in an old horse.

I picked up my engines for $100.00 each.
One was never started and the other two was only run for a short while.
Can't wait till spring to get started putting one in my Sears.
Cool little setup you got there Mighty Dodge. Using it to tow/pull stuff?
MightyDodge--Are you the member that had the video on here of the diesel conversion pulling a loaded trailer up a hill at an idle? I agree with Echo, your machine looks great. Been quite a few Diesel conversion posts on here. Some great ingenuity at work!
Thanx guys

I paid $100 for the motor from a buddy of mine and he gave me the tractor to put it in. Just use it to pull a cart, dethatcher, spreader and generally just putt around. Never made a video of it, I don't have a good camera.

I have done a few diesel conversions:

13hp Ruggerini (Lombardi) single cyl, vertical shaft engine in GT6000

7hp Yanmar diesel pull behind tiller converted to 3pt

10hp Yanmar diesel in JD 140 H1

22hp Kubota 3 cyl D series in JD 318 (for sale)
Somebody put one in a sears ff series a while back, don't really know what became of it but it was looking pretty sweet last I saw. You'll find it if you do a search for ff diesel.
Be advised some of the larger diesels turn opposite rotation of the small gas engines hence some manufacturers put them in backwards instead of doing it right.

Little Honda Civic aluminum radiators can be had on ebay for cheap and work great. I usually relocate the bottom outlet cause I don't like to cobble.

This is a Kubota 68 cube D1105 3 cyl.

I put one of those Chinese Diesels in a Wheelhorse C-125 over 4 years ago.

Its still working great 4 years later And I beat the **** out of it.

I think I either blew the stator, or the rectifier, so I have no power at the moment. Also removed my battery to make room for the new hydraulic cylinder on the front blade so now I am trying to figure out where to mount the battery again.

Plans are to put an alternator from a little Yota truck

I would recommend to anyone to go for it. The gas savings with the diesel make it worth it. I can run mine seems forever before it needs to be re-filled.

And here is the write up for the hydraulics fabrication.

Can you provide an example? I've never encountered that, except for a few marine engines where they are used in counter-rotating pairs.
All 3 & 4 cylinders i know of turn opposite the 1 & 2 cylinder lawn mower engines. That's why the CC 782D engine is in backwards cause they were too lazy to change the ring and pinion.

Which way does the fan blow the air through the rad? Back at the operator or ahead towards the engine? The warm air helps the engine warm up faster in cold weather.

My MF GC is the same and that's how it was explained to me, but I think it was to save money on the gear box for the PTO direction. That's why the installed the engine front to back.
