I have no real reason for knowing other than I'm just curious. I read a lot on here about both and was wondering what are the main differences between these two. How would you decide on which one you want?

Historically there were more differences but I think the biggest one right now is that the 6500 seems to be out of production except maybe for California models and Sears is going forward with the 5000 series name. Other than that the 5000's have arm rests which I don't believe I've seen on a DGS6500 and the older GT5000's I saw had Briggs and Stratton engines instead of Kohlers. The new GT5000's have the Kohler Courage though just like the last DGS6500's did. The DGS6500 was available with a 48" mower and the GT5000's seem to all have 54's from what I can tell.
