A friend brought his Deere LA115 yesterday. He said he was running it with a mouse nest in it and it seized up. I can't get the engine to turn at all. I need to remove the hood to start removing the flywheel cover and don't see how the hood comes off. It'a little embarrassing but in my defense the only Deere Tractors I own that have a hood are my 111 and the 160 I put a craftsman hood on.

There are 2 springs down low on the front of each frame rail. They have an obvious finger loop at the rear. Pull the loop rearward and then outward to get the springs off their bobbins. Then open the hood about 3/4 of it's travel and lift it up and forward. Right hand in a grille opening and the left hand at the upper rear where there is a cutout in the dash [ iirc ]. Once you get it off you can look at the frame horns and the hood hinges and see how they designed it.

I found what I think you were referring to but never could get the hood off that way. I removed the 4 bolts that hold the bracket and got it off that way. When I set the engine up on the tailgate and heard the pieces falling around inside I new that "seized" was not the term I would use. Looks like I may have another box of Intek single parts.

KAPUT !!

It's this sort of carnage that makes a $50 to $100 good running Kohler Command single almost irresistible to me. I have a 15 and a 17.5 just waiting for a home. Actually, the 17.5 is home in the L110 it left the factory in but I've already sold the deck and once I sell the tranny then the motor will go in the shed.

I got the hood up on where I could fool with it and did got the bracket to slide off the rod. I assume the rod is not supposed to be bent.
I completely agree on the engines. Even though this thing is as nasty as it can be it only has 230 hours showing. I'll see what he wants to do with it, I know he's already bought another mower.

I will admit to doing some stuff on the lid of the garbage can !! I've even got the neighbor across the street doing it !

I found the perfect solution !!!!!! $20 !!!!!!!!!!! Black & Decker Workmate 550 folding table. There is absolutely no way it can be left in the garage unless folded up. This means it's always available for use as a table !! Brilliant !!

I loaded the nasty thing on the trailer this morning to go to the car wash. I can't stand to work on something this nasty. I have a 14.5 OHV briggs I'm going to see if I can make work. I'm hoping the exhaust pipe will go into the original Deere muffler. For some reason this mower has a 9 amp regulated charging system even though it has a manual PTO. The engine I want to use has the 3 amp duel system but I guess I could use the stator from the Deere engine. That would keep all the wiring hookups the same though the 14.5 probably has the small magnets in the flywheel that would reduce the amps down to 5. If those thing work out I would have to figure out how to tap into the dipstick tube to run a fuel pump.

I got the worst of the nastiness off of it. I set the 14.5 on it and bolted it down. The header pipe off the old engine lined right up with the new one so I put the stack pulley, belts, throttle and starter cable on. I hope the hood clears the old style air box. I'm to the point of needing to decide if I'm going to change the stator or see if it will stay charged on the 3 amp one that's in the 14.5. I'll rig up a gravity tank to test it but if all goes well I'll need to rig up the fuel pump off the old engine.

Cannon...If you don't have an electric clutch, the old stator will work...but you can swap over the old stator and flywheel. I just did a Command into newer Cub Cadet swap that had a lunched Courage motor. I tapped a 1/8 pipe by 1/4 barb elbow into the dipstick filler tube and ran the pulse pump from the original Courage from that....worked really slick!

I would try the old filler tube on the new motor.
I went and looked at that. the older engine has a screw in grommet in the sump therefore the dipstick tube is smaller where it goes in the engine.

Yes I think the old stator would provide enough power but if I change the stator I could keep all the wiring and connections looking OE. Actually if I change the stator I will not change the flywheel.
