hi guys-

I rebuilt my mower deck, and have the belt routed correctly I even replaced the spring on the tensioner pully but for some reason the belt wont tighten and when I engage the PTO the belt slaps around like crazy and you can see the tensioner pulley moving back and forth. I did not replace the belt because it looked fine. What am I missing here?

Do you have a pic of the top side with the covers off? On the 60" decks there's an adjustable stop that's supposed to be tight against the back of the tension arm after everything is in place, but I can't remember if that was on the 54" decks. How tight was the belt when you first put it back on?

Rear most pulley is adjusted all the way back to provide maximum tension, tensioner pulley on spring is adjusted full forward. The belt slaps around, and the tensioner occilates back and forth quickly.

Hmm, I was hoping for a picture that was taken after you worked on it. If it doesn't have a back stop on the tensioner, I'll let somebody chime in that is more familiar with the 54" model

Other things that could use some clarification:

- What was the reasoning for rebuilding the deck?

- Is this something you have mowed with before and it worked like it was supposed to (not a tractor you just picked up)?

I rebuilt it because it had a bearing growl. It only has one bad spindle but I did all three, and replaced the center pulley. I used it all last year growling, buI don't remember the belt being so darn loose.

Shall I try a new belt? Honestly I doubt a belt could stretch this much, maybe its supposed to be this way and I just dont realize it?
Those belts are pretty robust and don't tend to stretch much. I replaced mine a couple years back just for grins. The old one was like 15 years old and still in excellent condition. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it did not stretch or change while it was off.

A pic of your current installation compared to the original would be nice.

Did you free spin the spindles when reassembled? They should spin slow and smooth if greased properly where a dry one will spin super free.

When I read your post this morning I checked the belt routing on mine and it is correct 4 run.I cant tell if yours has the bumper stop on the idler from the pic, mine was missing when I bought the tractor.I have noticed mine does bounce around some and seems like it almost should have more tension, but it works ok and doesn't slip. The bumper stop mentioned keeps the spring loaded idler from jumping around too much.

Sorry to chime in on this and piggy back. I'm not sure how to use this site correctly yet ... But i noticed i have the same deck on my mower and i'm having a issue with the blades not dis-engaging. They are always turning. The switch checked out ok with my ohm meter... I'm frustrated .. I can't seem to figure out the cause.

Could this be a solenoid?

Best bet is to open a new thread, especially when the one you're linking into is nearly 3 years old. There's a button that says "New Thread" at top left of the topic list.

However, if you've disengaged the PTO (not sure if a 425 has a mechanical or electric PTO), and the blades are still turning, then I'd check the gap between the plates in the PTO. There will be an adjustment regardless of PTO type (electric or mechanical) - sounds to me like your setup is too tight. Electric PTO's specify a .018 gap. There are tons of example videos on Youtube describing the process of adjusting an electric PTO clutch.
