Deere 318 Hydraulic Reservoir Overflowing

377 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  CantKeepUp
I was trying to put hydraulic fluid into my Deere 318 and noticed it was leaking. I took it apart to see if anything needed to be replaced or tightened and saw that the reservoir is full, but there is no fluid in the tube that would connects to the sight glass. When I remove the tube, the fluid comes out of the transmission, but I guess there isn't enough pressure to fill the tube when I put it back on.

Do I need a new transmission??

Probably the line is clogged and not allowing it into the tube..the original tubing falls apart and leaks over time..I replaced it with fuel hose on a 318 I had

Thanks for you suggestion. My tubes are clear and I was able to inspect them. They are not clogged.
Oil check tube appears to be full to me. It is not pressure that fills the oil indicator tube. You have a breather in the transmission case to keep pressure from building up above the oil level in the transaxle. That breather is a hole in the hose adapter in your first photo. Look over that adapter and you should find that hole. Make sure it is not plugged with debris. That hole is also supposed to act as a breather when you fill the transaxle through the fill tube. I know many 318 owners have had issue with this breather hole ... Gabby
If it is a clogged breather, disconnect the tubs above the sightglass. If fluid then fills the sightglass, it is an indication that the breather is the issue

Because the JD hydroguard is so light in color I always put a white piece of paper behind the sight tube to make sure I can tell that it is showing the proper level. Otherwise, I have a hard time seeing the fluid in the sight glass.

Ozie,
Agree with all. If needed, replace the part of the line that goes from the transmission to the sight tube area.
Check the white plastic elbow fitting - be sure it has the vent hole (it's supposed to). Fluid will leak from there if you overfill = normal.

Tried this yesterday, nothing happened. Tried it again today and it worked when I allowed the tube to hang below the discharge (don't know what it's called). Thanks!!
It's still strange that it didn't work when I removed the elbow fitting, but I will try running the machine and keep you all posted.

If you hung it low and it dripped out, then I would say clogged breather. If it flowed out, I would say low fluid level.
