There's a guy on the other side of town selling TWO Deere 317's. One is 100% complete with new trans and PTO clutch with the series 2 engine. The other does not run (be it could be something simple like the starter, he never had the time to look at it) and it has the old splash engine. They both come with decks, ones a 46" and the other a 48". The one that doesn't run has been repainted... poor quality at best but the hood is in good shape.

I checked them out today... in the pouring rain. The one that runs started right up but smoked a little bit at first. He replaced the rear end and you have to have the control a little bit in reverse to keep it from creeping. That's about it, they both have hour meters and ammeters and new seats.

I could pick both of them up for $750. Do you think it's a good deal?

Here's the link.

Yes, especially the one with the Series II Kohler. Fix the other one and sell it or keep for parts...the creeping can be adjusted.

The 317 are good tractors, except that engine thing. Think of them as 318s without power steering. I've often wondered if you could drop one of those 16Hp Honda clones into one. That would make a good little runner without spending alot of money. If it didn't last too long, who cares, you just buy another and keep on chugging.
