Just went and tried to start my 212 and the battery was to weak to do the job. Probably has not been started for 6 weeks or so. The funny thing is that this battery is so old I don't even remember when I installed it. It is a small wal-mart car battery. It is on the charger now so we will see what happens. I don't have the receipt and there are no stickers on the battery but I honestly think it may be 8-10 years old. If I have to replace it I can't complain.

I think he just proved you DO NOT need a trickle charger. If that battery lasted 8-10 years without one!

I never believe in them, if your vehicle (any vehicle not just a tractor) is working properly, meaning NO DISCHARGE of the battery when turned off. No trickle charge is ever needed. If storing for a long period of time, just remove the positive terminal!

Never heard of a lead acid battery lasting 8-10 years either... but if it did you better call Guinness... :)

still the fact that you cannot remember how old it is speaks well of the battery!

I can't remember how old most of my stuff is. It speaks volumes about getting older..I use a sharpie marker to write the year on most of the stuff I buy now....ten years sneaks by mighty dang quick.

The orig. battery on my 345 went 11 years it was well maintained. Stay away from the HF trickle charger I had one for my old truck that doesnt get used much and it worked good a couple years but a friend had one on his harley it caught on fire he lost the bike and his garage and almost lost his house. After that I took mine and threw it out.

On the subject of batteries, I may need a new one this year for my LX 176. It's only a single cylinder 14 HP. But it seems it always cranks slow. The battery is four years old from Wal-mart. Makes me wonder if it's the battery or something else that keeps it cranking slow. If I need a new battery, any particular brand or CCA to look for?

I once had a "91 Ford truck with the battery lasting 9 years. My wife didn't go for the idea of me telling her that I needed to trade the truck off because the battery went dead. Just no sence of humor!!
I have a 1998 Gmc Sonoma truck that has the original battery in it. i figured this winter would do it in but still going strong 14 years later!

A real "float charger" isn't even a trickle charger, > output is lower.
Float charger's compensate for the loss caused by self-discharge ie: non use.

Is that supposed to be a Zen Riddle?
