Howdy All;
My neighbor has asked me to figure out what's making an odd noise in the rear end of his '59 D-14 and to possibly rear it.
I stopped by tonight and took it for a test drive. I checked the fluid levels on the little breather by your right foot and the dip stick do-dad on top of the transmission.
There was no noise until I started to move, then at first it sounded like a dry, or worn bearing somewhere in the right drop axle. I tried all forward gears and no change in the noise or in it's speed, which I thought was odd when I went to higher gears with the engine speed the same.
I did make a left hand turn and then the noise sped up, indicating to me that a bearing in the differential was bad. However, when I had stopped and dismounted the tractor (while it was still running), it started to make that noise again within two minutes of me getting off the machine. This time the noise acted like it was coming from between the transmission and the clutch housing.
Any thoughts would be helpful as to what to check out first.
Thanks.
Poppa Dave.

Well Allyyooper, you might just be right.
My son and I stopped by the fellows place to have a better look see at what was actually going on with that D14 Saturday morning.
There are some noise coming from the right drop axle, but it's probably a dry set of gears or maybe they are just a little past worn out.
Anyway the real knocking noise is indeed coming from the section between the clutch and the transmission. It's always there, banging away until you push in the clutch pedal, then it stops. Isn't the hydraulic pump located in there somewhere? Bearings gone out at either end of that housing?
I haven't gotten that service manual or the parts book for that machine as yet, as I am waiting to see what the owner wants to do about it. It sounds to me like were are going to have to split it in half and the owner my say to heck with that idea, since I may not have the time or the space to squeeze it into my shop.
So we will see what happens next.

The old farmer didn't want to even think of paying to have the tractor fixed and with scrap iron prices dropping like they are, he didn't want it to go that way.
So I ended up buying the D14.
It's going to need new bearings in the clutch and while in there, I'll have the flywheel surfaced and a new pressure plate tossed in.
It is making noises from the right drop axle that change speeds, depending on which way you turn, so the right axle will be taken apart, cleaned, inspected and repaired as well.
The only other thing the tractor will need is some better fenders, tin under the fuel tank and front tires that match in size.
