The bearings are installed on the inside of the casing, the shaft is too short to allow install on the outside. The new bearings match the original parts and the part numbers match the owners manual.

I think the lower ones you see are where the (wheel) axle mounts through with another drive gear and chain (not in the pic).

That all said, if the sprockets and chain in the pic are off alignment it may work but will wear everything down quickly.

Are the sprockets asymmetrical? In other words, could one or both be installed backwards?
No they are not, this is probably a simple fix but right now I do not see it. I compared my newer Craftman (2007) to the subj older one (1997) and the new one deos mount the bearings on the out side. The subj one does not have holes for the shaft to extend through the casing thus outside mount is not possible.
