Craftsman LT 1000 with Kohler engine...lifter chatter.

Hello,

My question concerns recent lifter noise on my Craftsman riding lawn mower.

The mower has less than 300 hours over the course of 13 yrs. of service. The display is 460 cc, engine model # CV460S, SPEC # 26509, and family # 1KHXS.4902GB.

The oil has been regularly changed every season with 10-30 Quaker State and a Fram oil filter. The other day I started hearing a tapping noise...sounding like a lifter. I added an ounce of Seafoam ( system holds 1.75 qts. of oil ) to the oil and let it run at idle for 30 mins. The engine sounded much more quiet for a few days, but then the tapping reappeared.

Any idea what can be done to quiet the noisy lifter. I've read articles online that 10-30 Kohler oil should be used and that a Kohler oil filter should only be used as well.

Anybody have similar issues with Kohler engines & is this common for lifters to tap?

Thanks,
Mike

Welcome to MTF, Mike! Your best bet would be to post your question on the Craftsman forum, and/or the Engines forum. I HAVE read similar suggestions regarding Kohler engines in JD LT series tractors, ie. using Deere oil in those engines, which have hydraulic lifters. Posting you question in the forums mentioned should give you some ideas. Good luck! Meantime, enjoy the forums!:MTF_wel2:
