crafstman III ??

Hey guys, Im trying to buy this old craftsman garden tractor from a friend of mine...but the paint is gone off the side and I couldnt find any serial numbers.

All I know is that it is an 80s craftsman.
It has a horizontal shaft motor -> same engine position as a 64 cub cadet. So Im hoping its a shaft drive. It had a shifter that reminded me of my 79 dynamark, but I dont know how many gears it had. looked like 3 and reverse, I only took a glance. But I do know for a fact that it has the Hi and Lo lever on the side.

After researching on youtube...Ive come to the conclusion its a Craftsman III cause its almost identical to this one, only it has split headlights, I think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GuWbfMDZ00Y

Any Ideas or suggestions? How much can one of these go for in tip top condition? and how much should I be expecting to pay for it? Its always outside, no decals, tires look good. Comes with deck, front bumper, sleeve hitch and plow. It also starts and sounds good but doesnt stay running.

I would have pics...but I forgot. Even had my camera with me too! Darn...gives me an excuse to go get a better look tomorrow. lol

Expect to pay anywhere from 300 to 500. I'd offer 350 if it isn't in good working order.

I don't know about the craftsman III... this is the first time I'm hearing about one. The one in my avatar is an '86 Craftsman II and the only obvious difference is the headlights.

Anybody else hear of a Craftsman III before??

I offered the guy 200 cause its been sitting so long and it has problems. Havent heard back from him yet though.

Havent found out what is either. But I was looking on youtube again and its an exact copy of a Mid 80's Roper GTK-18.

Does it have a shift pattern that looks like an "I" with a Hi-lo lever above the right footrest? cause if so, it might be it. But dodgebob has a pic of a craftsman III in his gallery. http://www.mytractorforum.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=2268&catid=searchresults&searchid=3730

I haven't seen one but I've heard of them....they were the top tractor Sears offered during that time.

I'd say that's pretty fair.

Ahhh... I think I see. The Craftsman III has a 20HP Onan. You don't see too many of the boxy 80s style Craftsman II's with more than 18HP.

And all of those hi-lo trannies have that "I shaped" shift pattern with the range selector behind your right foot.

:goodl:hope ya get that machine. They're real workhorses.

Sweet! that'll be a whole new adventure in itself. Anything special or unique to these that I should look out for?

Im the only one whose ever seen it and wanted it so ill get it eventually...lol.

Oh I know its a workhorse. I saw the sleeve hitch and I was like OMG, its a, its a, its a...I dont know what it is but its big and its a craftsman and its a garden tractor...I gotta have it. Then I noticed the plow... it was then that I told my friend that I'd give his dad 200 for it and to call me.

The only thing that really goes bad on these models specifically is the steering set up. Teeth break off of the sector gear and the steering slips.
