My apologies to the moderators/admin here at MTF. I placed these questions twice before, but in the WRONG forums.

I initially posted in the introductions forum, then mistakenly posed in the BIG TRACTOR (CASE) forum. Then I realized that was incorrect as well.

If any of you all can help me with some of these questions, I'd sure appreciate it.

My Uncle has a early-mid 80's vintage Ingersoll/Case 446 Hydro. He's going to be moving into a condo in the near future and has offered me his Ingersoll.

At any rate, my uncles 446 seems to be in pretty good shape. He has a snow plow for it and a utility cart, he said I could have both (no mower deck though). He said it has 411 hours on it, runs good and needs nothing.

I have a few questions.

- Is the 446 "dual" rear wheel drive, or is it a "one wheel wonder" I'm asking because I'd be looking to use it to plow my driveways for now and once I get a bigger property, I'd look for a mower deck for it

I understand the onan engines these tractors have can be expensive to rebuild, but with 411 hours, hopefully it would go for ahwile yet.

Anything else I should look for? It's always been stored in a shed, so it seems clean for the year (I'd clean it real good if I bought it, wax the hood and fenders, ETC.)

He said he's not sure what he wants for it, but when he does I'll be the first to know. What do you all think is a fair price for the 446 with utility cart and snow blade if I'm buying it from my uncle (I'd expect at least some price break).

Thanks much for any help or suggestions you all could provide.

Welcome, I'm sure you will get many responses to your questions here. If it is an Ingersoll, it is at least in the mid 1980's to 1988. Very nice tractor with lot's of power and attachment capabilities. They are single wheel drive limited slip, not dual wheel drive unfortunately but with proper weight and chains they will pull stumps. The serial # on the plate below the steering tower will depict the year it was manufactured by using a chart here in the sticky's. If the engine runtime hrs. are correct then it is most likely in like new condition provided your uncle performed routine maintenance. I'm not in the habit of putting a selling price on a tractor because there are many variables but you can get a fairly good feel for price by checking Ebay, Craigslist, or sellers on forums. If the Onan engine starts good, no smoke, and no ticking noises, I think you can be confident it is in good shape and will last another 3,000+ hrs. before it needs attention beyond regular preventive maintenance. Post some quality photo's and the serial # if you can ..

:thanku:

I agree, the tractor is definitely worth considering. The blade if in decent shape depending on how wide it is, is worth $200 or more. The cart is a item often sought after and if in good shape can fetch a pretty penny. The tractor although not a rare item is a work horse. As far a the rear end you will not lack traction with a plow. And with a good set of chains and wheel weights or a weight box ( check my weight box thread) it will blow your mind what they can do. Just check out some pics in and around this forum

Quick add, when I got my 86 446 I thought it was the Cats meow, started and ran perfectly. I was so happy and still consider it one of my 'best tractor purchases', one day A friend says lets decarbon the heads so you won't have to worry about it in the winter, only to find it was running on one cylinder. I was in shock that it could run and be so powerful on one cylinder. The performance of this machine will amaze you, and it will blow snow with the best of them, cut grass or tend to property like few can...Were you to land this tractor, you won't be disappointed, its power and build quality are top notch...

Excellent info, thanks guys, that is the kind of information I was looking for. I'll have to let you all know how I make out in the end. I'm certinly interested in it for the right price. I've heard nothing but good things about these tractors, but I would have to go 3hours one way to pick it up. Again, not the end of the world, but there is fuel costs for my gas hog Ford Expedition EB.

Any other thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

when he offers you a price; pay the man! unless it's close to or on par with brand new price. it won't be if he has already offered it to sell it to you. i bought my '76 446 from my wifes uncle this past fall and holy schnikee's it's absolutley awesome and has way more hours on it than yours. and if you desire a mower deck you can go to http://www.eastmanind.com/INGERSOLL/tabid/186/Default.aspx
and price out a new mower deck. but if price is an option then key an eye on ebay. many tractors are being parted out for some reason or another. there are a few options for deck models/cutting widths you can choose from. Good Luck!

LOL, sounds good ND Case. Again, I have heard nothing but good things about these Case/Ingersoll tractors. I think it would suit my needs for now for plowing my driveways and when I get a larger property someday, I would look for a mowing deck for it.

Are parts still available for this Ingersoll 446? (I think the one poster was right, I'm thinking it's 1986/87 vintage or so? )

I would not be suprised if he came to me around 1000-1500 or so......which is what I think it's worth. I don't see myself going over 1500 though.

How much is a new 446 from Ingersoll or whatever they have that is comparable that is new? Are they still made in the USA?

Thanks,
Greg

WOW, just checked on new pricing from Ingersoll

This is CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just called a local Ingersoll dealer. He does not stock these machines but advised the following:

1) Ingersoll makes a 4223 PS with power steering for......$9,514!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2) He said they have a 21HP model for.......$8,295.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3) They have a 418 which is the "old style" for ............$7,418!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek:mg::eek:mg::eek:mg::eek:mg::swow::eek:

I know these tractors are very desirable and very well built, but I was NOT expecting that!

THose are list prices, but still, I'm sure the actual sale price wouldn't be more than a few thousand less!

WOW.

Good news! :)

Hey y'all!

I was just talking to my Mom and she must have recently spoke to my Uncle (her brother). Apparently he said that since I'm willing to wait unti he sells his house (could be another year, don't know, hopefully not) and since I'm his nephew, he will sell me his Ingersoll 446, plus the snow plow and utility cart for $750.00! :)

Yeah! :) I told her,,,,,,,tell him "SOLD" HAHAHA.......I'll have to figure out how to get the pic posted for you all so you can see my tractor to be.

Thanks for all the advise, suggestions, ETC. I really appreciate them. The utility cart and plow I'm going sand and re-paint and get them looking good again.

Funny thing is I remeber back when I was 10-11 yrs old and he took my brother and I for a ride in that utility cart on his property (he has just under 10 acres) and he went too fast around a corner and the cart flipped on it's side and threw my brother and I out.....HAHAHAHAHA...we were't hurt, so it was no big deal.....but this is the same tractor and cart so I have some history with it. It's good to keep this rig in the family. :)

It's funny that you have memories with the tractor that you are buying. You will hear many stories of these units being passed down through the generations. Just like my dad gave me my 3018 3 years ago ( couldn't pass up the deal lol). Any way you will love the tractor and it will blow your mind what they are capable of doing. have fun and get some pics up pronto.:howdy:

That soundds like you guys were having a blast in the cart. Like wseternmd said; you"ll be able to hand down that 446 to your kid and or nephew/neice one day. (hopefully not for a long while after you've givin her the 3000 hr service point. Good Luck.

P.S. I also had to wait a almost 6 months to finally go and get mine with my FIL from his brother, UIL. It will be very hard not to get it sooner but when your uncle is ready to sell it will make it all worth it.

LOL, sounds good, thanks for the thoughts. I appreciate them and when I get a free minute, I'll post the pic my uncle sent to me the other day, it's a side view at his house, with the cart and snow plow on. :)

In fact, to celebrate this deal, I just ordered me a "CASE/IH" hat from Case/IH.com. :)

GS Case - I was quoted by my local ingy dealer over 13,500 for a 4000 series with mower deck, snow blower, rear pto and rototiller. and that was after a considerable "package discount"... This was for a late model tractor he has had on site for over 6 years now... These tractors are not cheap, but the older ones if taken care of are still around and doing amazing amounts of work. Best of luck to you!

UPDATE: Uncle sold his house, picking up the 446 soon!!

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:fing32:

I got word from my Mom that her brother (my uncle) sold his house and will be settling up around the 1st week of July, so it's only a matter of time now till I get down to NJ to pick up the 446.......CANT WAIT!! He said he has all the original owners manuals, ETC for it he will give to me.

I'm glad it's coming to my "stable" sooner than later. Can't wait to get it home and get it cleaned up. After I get it cleaned up and serviced, I'll figure out if it needs any paint work or not or just some detialing (Yeah, I'll be waxing the hood and fenders!!)

I'll try to post some pics after I get it home and/or post the one my uncle sent me ahwile back.

Thanks for all the thoughts and words of encouragement, I really appreciate it. :)

Congrats, you made me laugh when you were complaining about a 300 mile ride to get it in another post, **** I put over 3500 miles on my truck in the last year picking up a 224 & 446 with a couple of attachment runs too. Good luck with it, take your time and ask questions (first) about it. See if you can get the serial # from your uncle now and you will be able to download the proper owners, parts and service manuals before you get it.:thThumbsU

Hi John,

Thanks for the thoughts, I appreciate it. Maybe I'll see if my uncle can get me the serial # off of it ahwile.

Where do I go to to get the service manual for it? I don't know if he's ever changed the hydraulic or rear-end oils yet, so that will be one of the first things I do. I'm sure there is a certian proccedure for doing that and I want to do it right the first time. Maybe put new spark plugs in it if it's been ahwile and run some seafoam though it to clean it out.

What for motor oil do you suggest? I was going to run 15-40 diesel Rotella in the hydraulics, rear end and also the engine itself. I really like the Rotella oils. Or should I just run straight 30 weight in the crankcase?

I also want to get a set of "Ag" tires for it as well since it's primary duties will be winter snow plowing at least for now.

If I want to store it for ahwile, should I run it totally out of fuel like I do my other mowers and equipment? ( I find that works best to stop the carb from getting gunked up with shellac/varnish and such)

Thanks again,
Greg
