I have a 2001 GT235. Recently there has been a clicking in the transmission. The clicking noise gets faster or slower by the travel speed I am going. Has anybody else experienced this and knows what it is?
I don't claim to be an expert, but it sounds like you've chipped a tooth on the differential. If the click is at the axle speed then it is on the ring gear if some other speed 3,4,or 5 times axle speed then it is the input gear.
All I know it does it in forwards and reverse. I was planning on getting this fixed by the JD dealership. Anybody got any ideas if this will be expensive?
On my 2001 gt235 my hydo was making a clicking then and even worse noise then it started to slow down. I stopped it then pulled the pin on the hydro and dragged it to the shop and thought the worse. I felt the belt that was ok then grabbed the cooling fan on the hydro under the seat and it wiggled. What I did was remove the seat pan and saw that the fan had worked loose. It started to wear down the teeth just a bit.
I removed the fan put on two washers put it back together with some locktight and its as good as new. This was all doen in about an hour or so and I feel I got lucky.
Get your hand in their and see if your fan is loose first. Tell me if thats the problem and I can walk you thru the seat pan removal if you need help.
Start with easy stuff first I always say. Also how is the belt?
Have you servced your hydo?
Also cost will be whatever it is to fix the problem so nobody could give you a idea what that would be. If they have to take it out your looking at well over 500 bucks.
It still has the original belt and I only changed the hydro fluid once and I ended up stripping the bolt where the oil drains from. So, I had to take it to a dealer. Do you think, those should be changed? I will try to look tonight and see if I can feel around for the fan.
No twigs under the tractor? None of the rubber missing from the inside of the V belt? Maybe a bearing on the idler pulley is on the way out, there should be one to keep tension on the drive belt. You maybe able to push it away from the belt enough to spin it by hand to listen for that ticking sound. Best to remove the mower deck so you can get a good look, good time to clean and inspect the deck and blades and sharpen them or install a set of mulching blades.
