Looking to buy one of these, no particular brand in mind. I have an oak tree that drops tons of acorns every fall and would use it to vacuum them up. Any of you guys use one for that? How well does it work?

Can't speak on the pictured style machine. Nor do I have acorns..I've got a older Troybilt/Gardenway chipper shredde/vac. The manual advises against "vacuming" acorns/walnuts, etc. Will damage the screen. But can drop them in the chipper shoot. You may want to see if you can find the operators manual and see if that style/brand does as you wish.

Ran across an ad for a Cub Cadet that's essentially the same MTD product shown. Went out to look and it wouldn't start. Obvious lack of maintenance so I passed. My question is how do these units work as a leaf vac? Problem I have with pushing the walk behind mower under the shrubs to pick up and shred leaves is that it picks up small rocks and destroys blades on my mower.

I have a TroyBuilt like the one pictured and an Pin Oak tree. It works good. It may not pick up all the acorns but I know it must be picking up some or most of them. It does a good job on the leaves. It is a lot easier than raking and the B&S engine always starts and runs well. No complaints.

I take the bags from the leaves that I collect in the back yard and put them into the compost. They break down faster because the leaves are shredded. In the front yard I bag them for collection.

I've had no problems with picking up rocks. Either it doesn't pick them up or it doesn't seem to hurt it.

I can also chip branches up to the thickness of 1/2" diameter. A handy feature if you have lots of trees around like I do.

I've been watching on Craigslist. The units like the Cub Cadet/Troy-Bilt/Craftsman (pretty much all the same MTD product) show up pretty regularly. There have been some good deals but too far to drive. Seems like the ones that actually sell go for around $100-150 if they are in good running condition. Dreamers keep posting theirs for $200-300 and they never sell. If the right deal come up I'll snag it. In the mean time I need to try starting my Bearcat that's been sitting for about 3 years
