Can the little devils live in clothes -- boots and shoes for example where they can lie in wait and re-attack you days later?

Yes they can. Spray your shoes with off and wash the clothes if you know you we're in chiggers. Also add about a few cups of bleach to a warm bath and soak for about 20 minutes, this will kill any on you.

Treat the clothes you wear outside with permethrin and it would hold up for 5-6 washes before you need to retreat. Keeps chiggers and ticks at bay.
