I am working my first 8N, and have a question.
The hood, which has after market "doglegs" is really tough to position on the tractor. In particular lining the lower bolt hole on the right side leg with the nut on the front axle support. It tries to line up to the rear of the nut.
The hood appears straight, though it has some wrinkles. Now I suspect the axle support, it is not cracked, and I don't see any place that looks bashed.

Does anyone have a way to check the axle support for square?

I would suspect the aftermarket doglegs from the land of "almost right" before thinking it was a 50+ year old axle support made to last this long...

BTW - I really like your work area! Nice place to work on a "N".

That's my thinking too, Dan. I took a tape to the hood assembly and the measurements seem what they ought to be; but it's my experience that numbers do lie. I'll take the legs off and put them side to side and check them next.
Brake parts came today, that will get things moving!

I'd measure fromt he mount location on the axle support to the rear flange, do this on both sides.. meaure diagonally, if posible as well, using a straightedge framing square to sight it up.. this will show any twists or side to side differences.

can do the same onthe sheet metal.. measure front dogleg mount hole to rear of hood, both sides.. then diagonal.. same as measuring up a building for square... side to side should be the same.. and diagonals should be the same.

Thanks for all the input, guys.
I'm still stripping paint at this point. That's a bigger job than I had imagined! Well it's almost done, and I hope that I'll have started the primer this week-end. I'm banking on "rusty iron" primer doing what it claims to do! I'll keep you posted!
