I recently picked up a 19" Lawn Boy 5253 in good condition and am looking to install a catcher on it. Is anyone able to tell me what options I may have, more specifically will it take a rear catcher or is the side the only way I can go? If I do end up with the side catcher am I able to use the 8917 set up that I have on one of my 21" mowers? Thanks in advance for any insight anyone might be able to offer regarding this.

Hi! The chutes for the staggered deck mowers are interchangeable from the eary 70's through the late 90's or early 2000's as are the side discharge plates. The 19" and 21" take different mulch plugs. The difference in chutes is whether they take the bag with the wire frame in the opening or whether they use the slide on bag with the plastic frame. The wire frame bags will work on the newer chutes designed for the slide on bags but the newer plastic frame bags will not work on the old style chutes specifically designed for the wire frame bags. There are rear bags and rear bag kits available on eBay that will fit your mower. Bill
