Catalytic converters?

Tuesday night i was talking to a fellow F.D. member who does small engiine repairs and he was telling me that 2012 new lawn mower engine will be required to have a catalytic converter on the exhaust system. And big brother is pushing Ethonal to 15%? Any body heard this or know if its true?

This is the first that I've heard of the converter.

The ethanal, the only thing that I've heard about 15% is what has been discussed here.
Yup--15% ethanol will be here first of the year...:(

I'm surprised small engines haven't had catalitic converters yet--wood stoves have to have one for at least ten years now!...they should put mechanical fuel injetion on them instead in my opinon, more emissions result from a poorly tuned or clogged carb than any other cause ..

Amen brother amen , probably be some sort pre-ban:Stop: , buy ,and hide them while you can !! Heck why stop there , why not converters on every gas , diesel engine out there , and stop selling replacement parts , so we are forced to buy the new updated GREEN TECHNOLOGICAL crap . Man i feel better now .
Stihl has used cats on some of their equipment for years with no issue at all. They actually get rid of most of the exhaust odor.

I'm not sure what future standards the Punishment Agency has in store for small engines.
While talking to my local Honda equipment dealer earlier this year, he told me Honda would be putting them on their mower engines next year. Don't know it that was all engines, or just certain models.
I may be wrong, but I seem to remember hearing that all OPE in California now has cats on them.
up here, there is lots of ethanol in our gas, it smells like carb cleaner, not gas :fing20:

havent heard about catalytic converters
My old Cub likes 112 leaded race gas. Had some left over after the end of the season so I'm using it in my old stuff. No way I'm putting 15% ethanol in my small engines.:thThumbsU

Oh, good. Ethanol uses more oil BTUs than it produces. The corn farmers have a great lobby. And my mileage is going to decrease while the price increases. It is a requirement to have microencephalitis to be in office?
I heard a year or two ago that Harleys are being mandated to put CATS on their new bikes. Don't know if it is true or not as I never really looked into it.

I was surprised to read in my Stihl leaf blower manual that it has a cat. And as Tractor-Holic said, 15% has been approved for the first of the year for cars made after (?) 2005 I believe, not the older ones yet. Will take a while to get the facilities for it wide spread.

We have an Ethanol plant near us. I am no expert but from a tour, I am sure the plant uses a tremendous amount of energy, mostly NG and electricity for our. I think only they claim about 1 to 1.3 conversion efficiency while crude oil is about 1 to 4.

It is nice to be getting over $5 per bushel for corn instead of the $1.65 I was getting about 4 years ago, that was less than during WWII. Anyone know of anything else price that way? Right after WWII I bought a lot of gasoline for 5 gal. for $1, now it has approched $5 for 1 gal being close to $3 per gal here right now. Now before we hear the food thing, there is maybe 15 cents worth of corn in a $4 box of corn flakes. Raise the corn cost to 18 cents and the box of corn flakes goes up to $5 blaming the cost increase on the "high cost" of corn.

i use sta-bil to combat the evils of ethanol

The last of the mighty Yamaha 2-stroke road bikes, the RZ350s, were equipped with cats. That was in '84-'85.

yeah; and hoard parts too; I have recently paid $17 for a piece of air vane to carb linkage for a 3HP Briggs hor shaft engine, that was originally built in 1982; and the 8 HP M8 Kohler I have most recently gotten? Go to Kohler website and look; every K series and Magnum list as "Retired" status; I have an M8 here and they want $60 for a flywheel fan (plastic!) and from what I can see, everyone lists it on "backorder"! (never to be avalable again?)
I found a guy via Ebay that listed some kohler stuff; no cooling fan listed but I asked a few of them if they may have "other" parts laying around beyond what they have listed; I found one, and he wants $20+shipping for a USED one! More than what a new one should cost.

Is this like the escalated price of freon for my old cars? (I have about 8 cans of R12 on the shelf; NO they are not up for grabs) they are pricing piddly little nickel dime parts (at least they still should be) at astronomical rates; Demand for them should be shrinking due to age and attrition but no; they are getting stupid expensive; yet to fix and sell a good used engine everyone still wants them for relative "nothing".
Once our generation is gone there will be no one to give a thought to what the government is mandating for OPE, or for anything else for that matter. They've already bred the "why" out of most folks today.

Re: "Stabil" and E15 gas. I don't remember reading that Stabil can do anything more for the "New and Improved E15 Motor Fuel" than it already does for gas we've been using up to now. Unless it's been newly reformulated I don't think it will be as effective as it has been up to now.

Here's something to consider: By increasing the amount of alcohol in fuel, the Feds can "request" that corn farmers not grow any corn for whatever year and for however long, manipulating the fuel market and controlling/dictating costs....and of course....PROFITS. What am I thinking? The Fed Gov't doesn't do that! LOL I feel bad for my grandkids! The Fed gov't is sticking it's nose in just too much today!!

Just a matter of time. I think there are a few bikes that already have cats...and oxy sensors.
stabil marine formula

<<Gold Eagle Marine STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer is the best ethanol problem fighter. This is more than four times the fuel system cleaner than the regular STA-BIL and double the corrosion fighter. Marine STA-BIL prevents corrosion from moisture and ethanol-induced water attraction. If you are using ethanol blended fuel in your marine application, Gold Eagle recommends Marine STA-BIL with EVERY fill up, not just for storage. This 8 ounce quick measure easy pour bottle treats up to 80 gallons of fuel.>>
