Ok, I am assuming that CAT 0 means the size of the implement or the mounting point to the tractor. I have a mid to late 70's MTD 990., my question is: I am looking for a tiller for it, is cat 0 what I need to look for in any implement or is it tractor specific? I know its a noob question, but I am about as noob as they come...:trink39:

CAT 0 is the implement size category. Most garden tractors have CAT 0 3 point hitches, meaning they have 5/8" mounting pins/holes and the lower arm spacing is ~20".

At the bottom of this page you will find a chart listing the size differences between 3 point hitches.

As a side note, Sears sold 3 point hitches for their garden tractors back in the 60's and 70's. They are called category 0 hitches, but have shorter lower arm spacing (12"). They sold a 3pt tiller for these hitches as well, but it wouldn't work with your MTD without some modifying.

Northern Tool sells a category 0 tiller:

Nope, you got it right! Just thought I'd warn you about it, as the sears tiller will probably be the cheapest and easiest to find cat 0 3 pt tiller.

you will need attachments specific to the MTD 990. the deck & tiller are both shaft driven. a front snow plow from other manufacturers can be modified to fit.

you can fabricate rear blades and whatnot for the 3pt.
if ya dig in the MTD forum you will get more than a few ideas for rear attachments.

You could ask or poke around in the Craftsman forum, pretty sure there are folks that have converted Sears Cat 0 to regular Cat 0.

Might open your options if you find a used tiller (to save money).

Hope this helps.

Yep, that would help.. I would have never thought of looking to c if any of them have done a conversion of some sort. Thanks again..... I went and picked up some of my implements for it today, and most of them are sleeve hitch instead of my 3pt. but thats fine, I can make em work.
