I was replacing my valve cover gasket on my LX277, 17 hp Kawasaki, FH500V. When I opened it up I found this broken piece in the cover. In your experience do you know what it is? It was obviously originally round with groove in the middle. IMG_0384.jpg IMG_0385.jpg IMG_0386.jpg

It looks like a grommet that had a plug in it like a fill cap. I know on some of the Kawa engines there is an oil fill hole on one valve cover.

I'm having trouble reading your ruler as the photo is fuzzy. Is the grommet about 1/4-inch in diameter? It could be the rubber from one of the valve guide seals and the grove is where the tension spring would go. I initially thought that since the valve cover bolts run THROUGH the center of the valve cover that it was a seal around the bolts but looking at photos of FH500V valve covers it looks like they use the gasket to seal.
