Can you Garden with a Gravely!!??

I have a 50 X 300 garden. My method of gardening for the past few years has been to;
Every couple years (not every year!!) Gravely rotary plow the garden with the 566,
plant 36 inch spaced rows,
till early with a 20" wide Troy Bilt,
mulch heavily (up to 9 inches deep) as time and energy permits,
enjoy a relatively weed free garden!! :drunkie:

Recently I have been wondering about using the 566 for more than semi-seasonal plowing. Maybe the Gravely would be less work than the Troy Bilt.

Have you used the 2 wheel tractor for cultivating?

What attachment do you use?

Is there a "push cultivator"? Something like this;

Could I convert the above cultivator to attach to the 566?

How wide of row spacing do I have to go to?

I have lots of rocks, so the rotary cultivator is probably not an option due to breakage.

I am ready to get started laying out the garden, Please help!

A lot of people have pointed out how the old Gravely attachments were largely designed to rest opposite the ballast of the old [relatively small] Gravely engines.

Whereas if you have a more modern Kohler engine on the back end, then the weight distribution can tend to get all out of whack.

Bottom Line: If you're gonna plow with the weight [and horsepower] of a K301 on the backside, then you need to bring your "A" game [and/or swallow a couple of shots of whiskey before you get started].

Not for the faint of heart.

I Have a Gravely tool bar set up to cultivate I'll sell for $100.
It can be done.... I've snapped the chain & broken several tines in 2.
slip clutch not working?
My comments about a rear toolholder referenced a home made adapter to use the Gravely 4-bolt (front mount) toolbar on the rear of a 5000 series tractor. The arms, shank attachments, and gauge wheels are mounted and set for forward travel. The adapter looks like this:

I like that. I may try to make something similar for my Ls. Heavier duty greasable gauge wheels would be nice too.

I don't recommend taking that literally. Drinking and driving a Gravely is a deadly combination :drunkie:

Yep.

But when your plow hits a tough spot and the K301 kicks the whole dadgum contraption back around into your face [in the span of about 1/100th of a second], then your cardiologist will tell you that a little whiskey goes a long way towards relieving stress-induced hypertension.

You know, they say that a man can die from fear...
