there's a 1250 on ebay that is ending shortly, but looks like won't hit reserve. i wanted to post a heads up in case he relists. here is the link:
bolens 1250

he advertises that the orig engine was a dealer upgrade to the s14d, who of course was a "little old lady." in the pictures you can clearly see the oil fill on the right hand side of the engine. the s12d only had the oil fill here, the s14d was top filled using a hole in the upper engine heat shield. also, the routing of the choke cable is of the s12d variety, mounted to the heat shield at the bent lip and down the rear side of the carb. the s14d routes on the front side of the carb.

he also states its a 54" deck. the 54" was not an option for the 1250, but IIRC it can be made to fit using the 48" hanging brackets. most feel that the s12d doesn't have enough power to efficiently run the 54" deck. i'm not sure if that is the 54" deck, the second gen 48" decks were factory red, but the rear wheels on the deck are mounted a bit differently than my 48" deck, so maybe it is...

nothing is entirely "wrong" with it being an s12d, as it was the orig. engine, but anyone interested should be aware that what the buyer advertises may not actually be true. I contacted the buyer but he insists its the s14d. must be the most rare s14d ever made then.

all in all, it looks like a nice tractor. I just don't want anyone to buy it with false information.

thanks all

That is one clean looking tractor for its age. It must definately been store inside and only drive on Sundays. But you are right that does look like a 12 Hp in it. Also the rear end does not have the raised embose word Bolens on it. Wilbuj will know when he see's it.

Can't you upgrade a 12 to a 14......? I thought you could replace the upper end of the engine on a 12d with 14 parts. This could be the case here so he may be right.

Yes you can, I know more then one who have done it. So it could very well be the case here.

yes u can upgrade the jug, but it is still a s12d... and NOT a dealer upgrade for the orig. owner... the guy was very rude in his replies to me as well. too bad, its a nice lookin tractor but the guy doesn't know what the **** he's talking about.

I see it sold for 898.88

I'm a "Tube Frame Guy" so I'm not sure if that a decent deal or not, but it sure sounds kinda high for me.

BUT, this is in the COLUMBUS OHIO area, and it's not at all unusual to see some really high $$ being asked for some Bolens tractors.

Here are just a few:

I'm pretty sure that the 1st and 3rd are the same tractor. Guess the guy finally figured out he WASN'T going to get 1.500.00 for it :sidelaugh

I really, REALLY think that there's something in the water down there.

Yep, I think there might be a little too much chlorine in the water also. I'm 45 min east of our great capital city and do all my Bolens shopping in PA!
