busted tranny on 16 twin

Hi folks. Built a root ripper yesterday and was trying it out when the tranny let go. Had backed up and just started to move forward when the tractor stopped, thought it had jumped out of gear. I can shift it, that part is still getting power , the gears will grind if I don't depress the clutch. Rolled the tractor forward and I see the parking brake drum still turns, so the prob is between the sections. Was wondering if anyone has a repair manual or a better parts breakdown then the one posted on the Sears site. Tractor is model 91725181, trans model 633A78. Tks in advance , Mike

If thats the 3 speed Hi/Lo tranny that the parts list shows,, You must have been putting some serious torque on that thing,,, Those transmission's are about as tough as they come,,

First thing to check is the shear pin on the Transmission input shaft,, It might be tight enough to grind gears but not move the tractor..

did you hear anything break?? I would think you would hear some serious noise if something let go inside. I have never been inside one of those so can't be sure what might break

Give some more details: weights on wheels,,, what gear are you pulling the roots in.. are you yanking or gently applying pressure...:crybaby:

There was no "snap, crackle, or pop" Even tho a few minutes before that the front wheels lifted off the ground. I was using H1 gear and at the time wasn't pulling anything. When I was pulling, the tractor would be moving then the hook would catch a root. I don't think it is major, thinking as you it is a shear pin somewheres. Prob find out today when I get a chance to look at it.
Go to the stickies section- I have a list of manuals there that are available free on a webpage where I loaded them. Grab a manual for a GT18 or a 18/6 it will have what you need.
got it ! tks GT

Maybe a axle key sheared,or the hub cracked...see if the axle shaft turns while its in gear with the clutch engauged....when I first fired up my '68 Suburban 12,it wouldn't move, and at first I feared I'd been gypped, when I bought it I was told the tranny worked fine...I noticed the tractor did "lurch" a little when I let the clutch out,and then I saw the left axle shaft spinning--the cast iron hub for the wheel had cracked,a big chunk was missing where it clamped to the axle, and it had no axle key!--I swapped another hub on it with a new key,and it does work fine,I'm glad it does, because I had bought two of these tractors from the same guy and the other one had bad shifter detent balls and would slip out of gear or jam into two gears at once, and I sure didn't feel like having to do ANOTHER tranny swap, after replacing that one!..
Had a chance to check the tranny out today. The problem was stupidity. The tractor was in high range when I last used it and must of hit the hi-lo shifter and put it in neutral. What a dum A## for not checking! Had myself all worried for nothing!

This was my first thought, but I didn't mention it because I figured that was way to easy.
Glad u fixed it cause you was starting to make me think you broke the pinion setup!! thems hard to break, but ive broke 3 of them!!!
:banghead3:banghead3:banghead3:banghead3 U aint the first and wont be the last...at least it was a simple and free fix. Thats almost as bad as me releasing the hydro to push a tractor in the shop then spend 1/2 an hour trying to figure why it dont go after I get the engine up and running...:banghead3:banghead3:banghead3:banghead3

Glad it was a free fix. :fing32:

I once forgot one of the belts on my LT10 36, had it off for some reason and we got 5 inches of snow. I rushed home off the bus, opened the garage door, did my normal pre-start check over (belt was hanging on the cab door), and fired it up, went to go forward and nothing... I almost lost it thinking I shredded a belt or broke the chain drive. checked to see if the belt was intact or not and found no belt so I spent an hour looking for it, finally went to shut the cab door and it wouldn't shut, than I noticed the belt hanging there. OF course I had already finished shoveling by them too.

These simple fixes seem to happen to us all once and awhile.
Haha hugh, ive rough on these old gals, if it can break odds are ive broke it....i finally had to move into the cub cadet drive line to handle the hp and torque i was trying to run....
