Just dont do it again!

I will guess that the short was in your connections at the starter solinoid...(I just bought a lawn tractor and the seller had done just this.) These solinoids need to be checked with a ohm meter everytime before installing. You cant trust the wiring diagram to know what parts you are using. There are several type solinoids that all do the same thing. Difference is how the wires go on.

Okay if it was some other less rookie thing, then find out what...

thank you kindly for the wiring diagram. i did not have it will be a big help. as too what happened is my father bless his soul could not leave nothing alone. he had to add lights and horns, and whatever other gizmo he thought well one of those added wires got caught under the engine shroud and needless to say it was hot so nice short out. so now it's my turn to replace all my wiring thanks for the diagram

go get a fuse block from an auto parts store. run the hot and switched power to it, keeping tha trun as short and protected from harm as possible. then run power out to the added stuff! that way if it happens again all you lose is a fuse.
too bad somebody didn't suggest that to the ol man
welltractor back up and running again. thank god rewired the whole thing added fuse block for lights and such. now she runs thankfully.
