I found a jd 400 locally for 2900 it came with a mmm, tiller, and snow blower. It looked like it was in great shape. Would the 400 have a diff lock or not? What years did the 400 start and end? I didn't call soon enough can't find the number and isn't advertiesed anymore so i think it sold.

The 400 was made from 1975 to 1982 The 400 did not have Diff/lcok but had a 2speed Hydrostatic transmission. The 420 was the First JD Garden tractor to have Diff/lock.
Thing you should also know about the 400 It does not take attachments from other models such as the 420 & 430. So it might be a good thing you missed out on it.

This link should help out on Deere's made Before 1992 http://weekendfreedommachines.org/info/

I know it doesn't take attachments from other series but it had all of the attachment that i would have needed that would need to be model specific.

That sounded like a reasonable price for that package. Sorry you missed it.

FWIW, alzwelding.com makes a frame squeezer bracket for the front which allows use of 300 series front implements.

I looked on the John Deere machine Finder and this one was listed, now dealer prices are higher then private sellers. 1977 John Deere 400 $5,500 US 1977 JD 400 Lawn Mower, 2250 Hrs, Hydro, 60" Mower Deck, 26/12.00-12, Bias, 3PT, 540 PTO, Front PTO, 2 SCVS, Tiller Year:1977 Hours: 2,250 Power: Status: On lot. Click on the link there are 4 pictures of the tractor, it located at DAKOTA FARM EQUIPMENT, INC. 14404 86TH ST. SW BOWMAN, ND 58623 USA 701-523-3252 & 1-800-422-3450. Got to figure for a 1977 and hours on tractor works out to around 70 hours a year. How many hours on 400 you missed out on? Or use Machine finder to locate something with the attachments your looking for http://www.machinefinder.com/

Too bad man.. that stinks!

I did a quick search on CL for garden tractors in ND... man, there are slim pickins for sure. You must be in "Big Tacktor" land or something, cause all I was finding was the big boys and only a few GT's in there.

Only thing I found that might be worth looking at in ND is this 318. Looks like it was gone over fairly well. It comes with a tiller and mow deck. But, the price is pretty high in my opinion( maybe because there are not a lot of GT's to be had in you area??).

Not much help, sorry... I think you might have to do some traveling to find a good deal on a GT, because it looks like your area is sparse in garden tractors. No wonder that 400 sold fast!

Do you have a truck/trailer or know someone with one? if so.. how you feel about a road trip?

Yeah lots of big farms around hear. And the thing to do here is build a house on 1 to 40 aceres people getting sick of living in town i guess. Everybody that has one of these doesn't want to sell them. I have been searching since last summer for eithor a big gt or a cut and have only found 2 used cuts, and maybe 6 gts.
