I have an X728 and I'm thinking of adding a Buford loader but I'm wondering if the hood can be opened with it on?

Not really. I think it opens a little bit but not very far. I use my Buford on my X748 and 455. Right now it is on the 455 or I would check for you. It is amazing on the X though. Tons of lifting power and great with the 4WD.

The problem is it always seems like I need to change implements. Sometimes several times daily on the weekends. I'm concerned that the removal and assembly would take forever.

There is a new 45 loader on EBay at the moment....... And I know of one that is in mint condition that is for sale.....

Not knocking Buford Buckets, folks seem to love them, but a 45 also has what seems like triple the capabilities... Just my opinion.

If that is the case I would get a 45 loader. It's on and off in minutes. To install my Buford I am looking at least 30 and that's using an overhead hoist.

It takes me less than 10" to put on or take off my Buford Loader. I will try to shoot a video of the process tomorrow if I have time. I have it on a cart so I just roll it up to the tractor, slide in the mounting bolts, attach the hydraulic lines, start up the X728 and off I go.

As to the OP, you can open the hood a little, but really you have to take off the Buford to do anything significant under the hood.

Here is a video I made for the 45 loader install/uninstall.

Nice video Mr Beef!

I gotta admit, it is easier to put on the 45 Loader than the BB. On the other hand, it costs 2x as much, so I guess you get what you pay for. I am completely satisfied with the functionality and value I get from the BB, but the 45 sure does look a nice addition!

I'd buy a 45 loader but I can't find one.

yes, if given the option (available and for a little extra$$), my vote is for a FEL for many reasons, height, weight distribution....opening the hood, more weight to be lifted, etc, it's the pure physics of the FEL versus a bucket

Here's the thing. Why the heck is the 45 loader worth $5k. That's the going rate around here. Heck, even the HT100 for the 1026R sells for $3k. For that I can get a skid steer loader that is better built for the job and I won't have to take it on and off?

-Price is how and why one ends up with a Buford Bucket. IIRC....I paid $1500 for my buford including the bucket forks and teeth. It is good enough for my needs and I couldn't justify the 3 grand for the 45 loader. It also stores in less space, which is nice for my requirements. I'm sure the Buford price has gone up in the last few years though do to material increases. I put hitch pins in my loader mounts, to replace the bolts, and it has greatly reduced the amount of time to remove the Buford. But it is still no where near as easy as MrBeef's video of the 45.
-You can see the hitch pins between the loader arms and the sub-frame. I remove the loader and leave the sub-frame on most of the time while mowing. It makes a heavy duty brush gard.:fing32:

I get they are expensive, but we own 445's, 728's and 485/749's, and it ain't just so we can mow the yard. Not busting your you know what's, but if one were patient and didn't mind a reasonable road trip, I bet a nice 45 could be had for around $3000 and if not....

JOHN DEERE X475 X485 X585 X595 X700 ultimate

plus the geometry of the loader versus any substitute is just better

-There have been several threads regarding those CTC loaders and they are mixed reviews for sure. Some folks love them and others have been udderly discusted with the product and support. Their claim to "better geometry" seems unlikely from the threads I have seen. I would purchase a used 45 before a new CTC strickly based on feedback on this forum. That said, I would strongly consider selling my machines and buying a scut before handing over $3000+ for a used 45 loader.:dunno:
