broken front axle on ford 1600

well, just started using my newly aquired 1600 and was moving a little dirt around the yard. Tractor runs great, hydraulics are excellent but after moving maybe 10 bucket fulls of dirt, the left front spindle/king pin piece snaps clean off about 3 inches from the spindle!! Was very surprised to see it is made of cast and not a solid piece of steel. I was digging dirt from a spill pile that our basement was dug from. Maybe I was digging too hard into the pile? I have used Michigan loaders and case skidsteers for years where I work and have never experienced anything like this before. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. sorry for the long winded post.

no thoughts on why it broke? the other side has been welded too!! should have looked as little closer at it when I bought it ..:duh:
Did you break the axle or the axle extension? If it was the extension, I would say when/if you find replacements, move them in as close as you can to the axle with new bolts and crank them down tight. After using it for a while continue to check the tightness of those bolts. That front end was a little weak for loader work. If you plan on keeping it you should baby it like it's a brand new car off the showroom floor.

A GOOD welder can make it as strong or better than new. In fact welding it and adding some additional reinforcement might be the best way to go since you have a loader on it. :goodl:
Thanks for the replies. I have searched and searched in western Canada, but no parts to be found. I will probably take the axle off and have it welded. Yes, it is the stub piece that has the tube that holds the spindle, it has 3 holes in it that bolts to what they call the "axle shaft"- just another bar that is bolted in the middle under the tractor and extends a little ways in both directions- left and right.
