Split my JD 1010 diesel to replace the clutch assembly. Discovered clutch pedal return spring was broken in half, but still on the clutch pedal shaft. No spring readily available, so completed without removing or replacing the spring. Expected would have to jury rig an external spring or flexible strap to add tension to the clutch pedal. Tried the repaired tractor without adding an external spring & realize clutch seems to work okay. Question: am I hurting my new clutch assembly by running tractor like this?

Have had time to more research on the question I posed. On another forum poster said shortterm use okay, but long term use with no clutch pedal return spring will put undue wear on
the throw out bearing. John Deere dealership says spring part I need is no longer made. Could find no equivalent new part. Did see one listed on a salvage site for $20.00. Also read another poster suggested an external jury-rigged system with a spring or strap to accomplish the same thing. Any comments on an external system & how to rig it?

Think I'd spend the $20, get the spring and then take measurements and ck places like Grainger, auto supply houses and here https://www.thespringstore.com/replacement-springs.html After you get the measurements you can install it on tractor and work on alternatives is first idea doesn't work and if spring breaks again. Just my 2¢.
