Hi, Have a Briggs & stratton L head opposed twin cylinder 20HP motor. Just rebuilt the carb. Starts up and runs fine, been looking for info about these motors, don’t see much.
See mostly info for the 16 and 18 very little on the 20. Are these motors any good? Are they reliable? Thank you for any info, Mark

Well they are just a "stretched" 18. Many of the parts will interchange. They do use a different piston and ring design. The heads have deeper cooling fins, the cooling shrouds are bulged to cover the larger cooling fins and there is some milling internally to allow for the longer throw crankshaft, crank and rods are different. Like anything stretch, they are perhaps a little more susceptible to greater damage when they fail. There was a relative few of them made because of EPA emissions regs. all flat head engines were discontinued.

I have one I just rebuilt it a few months ago. Great motors easy to work on. My motor blew a hole in the piston tho..I think it was a screw but I didnt find any trace of it when I tore it apart. I have mine on a 48" 2007 husqvarna riding mower and it has been reliable so far.

I have the manual for it online..if you need it let me know and i'll send it your way.
