Briggs & Stratton gas tank issue

I need a gas tank but can’t find one that isn’t more expensive than a Harley Davidson.

694315 is the tank but B & S said it’s no longer carried and no replacement is available.

Anyone else had this issue or know of a work around.

The carb sits on/in the tank and wondered if I could change out the carb along with a newer model tank?

probably can find a cheap piece of equipment with the tank. lots of that style out there.

I’ve looked on eBay and I can’t find any there. I don’t want to spend 150 to two hundred bucks for a gas tank.
I think the cheapest route is just convert it to propane. It runs at a set rpm so it should be simple except for the finding a valve. I’ve used a Bottle torch valve before.
Randy's seems to have 'em for a buck fiddy (ouch)...

Would any of those other numbers work? Seems a few tanks are quite similar.

The Amazon tank sure looks to be a duplicate of the other listing @$150 a pop.

You could replace tank and carburetor with something different. In general, you want the replacement to be close to the original rating(hp more or less) of the original. That keeps the carburetion adjustments to a minimum.
If the old tank has rusted through, some will use metal or epoxy to effect repairs. If it is just rusty inside, and you are concerned with it clogging the carb passages/jets, you can clean, etch and apply an internal coating to prevent further corrosion and encapsulate the surface imperfections.
A used tank and carburetor would be less expensive in most cases, but you would need to inspect them for condition, obviously.

Yeah... we kinda skipped over that but what's the problem with the one you got?

Ahh... that could be a problem, yep... yowza. :ROFLMAO: 🍻
Several of the tank models have a smaller top access for the carb probe. Apparently this is the only model made this way. I suppose I could get one of the other and cut a larger hole.

However the tank had a small reserve area that a second carb probe entered and seems to work as a bowl.

I am thinking propane will be the best route. It’s simple and don’t have to worry about the alcohol in the gas causing the carb to foul.

Between the alcohol and the EPA the carbs are driving me nuts. I repair my son’s lawn equipment for his side job and the carbs are a mess.
Hear ya there... cows weren't built to eat corn, and neither was the internal combustion engine. We're lucky, little or no ethanol here with a 3% max limit.

Never tried a propane conversion but there's lots of vehicles, taxis especially, running it on this side, never hear of any problems and those regularly go half a million kilometers. Be neat to see how you do it if you want to share... be a fun experiment.

I converted a front tine mower this way. It’s not hard. I’ve heard mechanics who say propane powered vehicle engines look brand new when you open it up.

Back in the late 70’s early 80’s my dad converted his pickup to run on both. Nothing sophisticated. Ran a copper line to carb with a valve under the seat. He installed a valve for the gasoline
line too.

Turn gasoline off and waited for it to sputter then turned on propane. He used it for the highway. He got a lot of preignition under load but on the highway it cruised fine.

He had a very big tank in bed of truck. Propane was much cheaper than gasoline.
I suppose I could take a few pics and send y’all’s way.
That'd be very kind, thanks. 🍻
