I was given a Troy-bilt Tuffy last week.

I've had the carb off twice , used a small wire through all the passages and it still surges up and down. It does a little better with the choke on half way, but still surges. This carb does not have any adjustment, both main and idle jets are fixed. The idle jet can be removed but is screwed all the way in (?) when installed. I plan on taking the welch plugs out in the morning and clean behind them. What's the current opinion on dipping these things?

Running with choke tells me it's starving for fuel.A good cleaning and kit should do it.If you got some carb.dip,by all means, drown that boy.Just remove everything first, needles, jets, screws, etc. What part of our great state are you located?
Dude, Northwest just below Chattanooga in Dade Co.

Check your throttle shaft for side play. If it is worn, then you are running lean not because of too little fuel, but by too much air. AFAIK they don't make a repair bushing, so a new carb is the only fix. With it running, spray a little carb cleaner around the shaft, if it changes how it runs, you found the culprit.

I had the same problem with a later PJ carb. Unfortunately, you can not reach the transfer passage to the idle jet. If there was a way to remove (and re-install) the main jet, the carb. could probably be fixed. My solution was a NOS carb. on ebay.

I removed the welch plugs this morning and sprayed carb cleaner through all the openings. The only one I'm not sure of is the idle jet. The opening from the idle jet to the mixing chamber is clear but when I force the spraying straw on the can to the back of the idle jet hole (where I assume the gas is drown from) I can't see the spray soming out anywhere. Should it come out the main jet opening?

I would say yes. That's exactly as far as I got with the one I was working on. Too bad the main jet is not removable for cleaning.

I would say dip it. Some carbs just refuse to work properly until there dipped. With stubborn tecumseh carburetors, I usually end up dipping them 3 times and clear the jets with carb cleaner immediately after removing from the tank.

It's been soaking in Simple green/water for about 24 hours now. 'Ive taken it out a few times and checked it but still no change. I may have to get some carb dip but didn't want to remove the plastic pickup tube and choke arm.

Lucky dog, we can't get that good of a dip out here. Going out of state soon, I already have orders for 4 cases of 1 gallon cans of the good stuff. That's BAD when you have to feel like a drug smuggler just to get some good carb cleaner.

I put it back together this morning. It runs much better at full throttle but still goes up and down at idle. I'm going to let it be for a while hoping the Seafoam will work some majic. Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, the links do not cover the latest version of the carb. with the brass main jet on the bottom. Were it removable (and replaceable), these carbs. could be easily repaired.
