I pulled the 16 hp Briggs engine from a tractor I am fixing for a friend and noticed that the crankshaft is short. I believe that this is the original engine. I was surprised to see that the crankshaft does not extend the full depth of the gear. Apparently if the crankshaft is short by 1/4" or so, it is OK.

For those that are doing a repower, if the crankshaft is a bit short, it might be OK.

Nope. It is something shorter. Apparently the length of the crankshaft is not critical. Ideally it should be the full length, but being a 1/4" short isn't going to matter either.

On my latest repower, it would not have helped. I was short by about 0.500 inches. I made a stub section and bolted it to the end of the crankshaft.
