Hello all,

Have a 407777 0121-e4 030325 that is over revving upon start up. Put choke all the way on and it slows down to normal. Start to release the choke any at all the rpm’s shoot way up with a lot of black smoke coming from the exhaust. I’ve checked the governor linkages and the adjustment of the governor itself. It all appears to be functioning as it should. I took the carb apart and cleaned it out. There was some dirt inside, it helped a very little but was not the solution. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

I know you say that you checked the linkage, but is the carb throttle plate free to move? Is the plate even still where it belongs? There have been cases where the screws came out and the plate falls out of place. Take a look into the carb intake and make sure the plate is indeed there, and that its shaft moves freely.
Putting the choke on limits the intake of air, and the engine runs very rich, so the RPM's come down.

id start were Fcubman said too that would be the easiest thing to do first...if that's not it are you for sure the governor is adjusted right and its not off? I have had 4 briggs motors that all ran but the governors were out of adjustment just a simple fix and there all fine now its just something that happens over time as the motors get used but id double check first.
