I just completed a repair to this engine after it bent a push rod, which i really appreciate Walt's advice on the fix, but now that's it's all together now it wont rev to 3500 rpms. I dont have a tac so i'm guessing it's only reaching about 2500 rpms. Everything seems to be connected as the manual states and this problem did not exist prior to tear down. I've adjusted the static governor settings but problem hasnt changed. When WOT at about 2500 rpms i can manually open the throttle to get it to rev to 3500rpms so it seems like theres too much resistance on the governor that's preventing it to rev'in to the desired rpms.

Is there any chance i put the internals back together wrong? The governor shaft has a "paddle" on the end of it that sits on the back of a spool that may have gotten installed in the spool instead of behind it? I was very careful not to let that happen but i'm grasping at straws here. Would this cause the engine not to respond to the governor correctly??

I would not look to get 3500 RPMs out of it. It will last much longer set to a maximum RPM of 3200 RPMs at the most. If the governor is holding it at the RPM you say, it is probably installed right. Did you set the shaft and lever on the outside right? If so you can adjust the tension spring to adjust the RPMs.

The shaft and level of the governor that's inside the crankcase? I'm quite certain i did, or at least really tried to. I know i was holding the governor shaft so that the "paddle" or forks sat against the bottom of the lower crankcase when installing it, just like i had in the past, and according to the manual.

Everything else appears to be assembled correctly according to the manual so that's why i'm wondering if it could be something internal. Man i really dont want to pull the engine again but without seeing anything obviously wrong on the outside, i'm not sure what to do next.

Like i said it had no issues prior to the pushrod getting bent and worked perfect. so it's obviously something i did during assembly.

Well i finally figured out what the problem was, one of the pushrods for the intake fell out of place at some point between setting the valve lash and starting the engine. When i first fired it up after replacing one of the pushrods i was surprised how quiet it ran and how it idled a little low. I thought it was because i hadnt adjusted the valves in a while and the carb needed some minor adjustments. It wasnt shaking and no other signs that it dropped a cylinder besides the lack of rpms and power. I removed the engine and went over everything again to make sure i didnt miss anything and when i went to check the valve lash, i found the issue. I'm sure glad it was an easy fix and things are back to normal.

Now it's on to the next project, a beat-up Lickity Log Splitter.
