I need the length of the dipstick from the top of the metal cap to the "FULL" mark on a 16hp single cylinder Briggs engine. The PO broke the dipstick, repaired it and never affixed the cap on the stick. As a result depending on where the cap is located, it is either overfilled by a quart or a gallon low or somewhere inbetween.

Does the oil capacity in the service manual not solve this problem? 2 qts. as per the I/C instruction manual on OldGravelys.net

I was pouring in oil from a jug and didn't pay any attention to the marking on the side of the jug. When I put the dipstck in I noticed that things were moving around. I really didn't want to go out in the cold, drain it, measure what came out, etc.

Is this the dipstick that goes to the top of the cylinder head? I have one here that is about 17 inches. Is it the one you need? this one is top of cap to full mark is 15.5 and add is 16.3/16.

A cold front moved in last night so it is 43 degrees out there.

I checked mine - I get 12-7/8 when I measure from the full line to where the dipstick cap seats on the tube when you thread it in.

That's also somewhat flattening out the dipstick - so if you were to use a longer dipstick, you'd want 12-7/8 from the end of the tube to just touch the top of the oil.

That's a Briggs I/C single cylinder that Richard is talking about. The one used on early riders.

I just looked up OldGravelys.net and it could be one of 4 different numbers/ dipsticks. 2 long ones, a medium one and a short one. Which one are you looking for Richard?

Which one? I will have to measure what I have and see if anything makes sense.

Wouldn't it be easy to just take the specs off the engine and order a new one from Briggs?
