Brand new K66 on ebay for $299.00

Just saw this and am contemplating getting one to set back for my x320 one day but I have a few questions hoping somebody can help me with. First, will this even work with a x320? Will I need the upgrade kit or is that just for tractors with the 1/2" axles? He says his upgrade kits are around $400 if I recall correctly and I really don't have that little confidence in the K58 to spend that kind of money on upgrading? Second, I know TT still makes these, so is there an abundance of these out there at this price? Thanks.

Just out of interest, is there anything that gives you the impending doom feeling w/ your K58?

The K58 is the replacement tranny for what used to be on the LXs (as most of us know by now). I'd be surprised if LX owners were stockpiling spare transmissions expecting them to take a dump ....

Personally, I feel comfortable w/ the upgrades inherent in the K58 design over the K46. I think its a good upgrade and I'm not worried about it.

Jopopsy, no there is nothing that makes me feel uncomfortable about the K58. As a matter of fact, I have read of only 1 failure, which fell under warranty, and that was on some other internet site. Even Lexus produces a lemon every once in a while. Anyways, I was just thinking if down the road, say 400 hours or so, I felt like tinkering with something then it might be a fun winter project. With the K66 I would have pretty much a garden tractor since everything else on the x320 is garden tractor quality. Worst case scenario, somebody somewhere would probably want to upgrade/replace their transaxle and I might be able to recoup most of my money. I just don't have the mechanical skills should this swap out require a conversion/upgrade kit.

I take TT for it's word when they say the K58 is a "heavy duty" transaxle.

I'm taking TT's word too - otherwise I would have stuck w/ the X300 !!!

Speaking of which, I noticed the 17HP Kawa on the X300 was not as smooth as the 22HP Kawa on the X320, but it didn't crank as much to start. I wonder if that's a size thing ...

I got mine for $218 plus shipping which made it something like $247. It was a K66R. I don't know if thats different than the model you need.

Don't know if I will ever really need one, just cheap insurance while they are available. If I ever go to the trouble of pulling the K58 to change fluid, then why not throw in a heavier duty transaxle for that price. Just don't know if it would easily slide in or would I need a conversion kit or something. As far as I know, nobody has really done this, or needed to do this, yet with the x320.

I don't understand how these can be offered so cheap when dealerships sell them up near $1,000. Is there really that much of a mark up on these??

Well I got this from reading various posts where owners have had failures in their transmissions and needed new ones, not k58s in particular. Anyway, they said dealerships were charging around 1K for the transaxle not including labor.
