Bolens/MTD weedwhacker carb mixutre screws--special tool?..

Tried adjusting the carb on a neighbors Bolens/MTD weedwhacker the other day--it has some "tamper proof" carb mixture screws on it--no screwdriver slots--the heads are round with a flat on one side, something like the old GM Q-Jet carbs had in the 80's ,with the "D" shaped heads..

It had been bogging out when you gave it throttle, and dying at idle,it would stall ,no matter where you set the idle speed screw..(they had it cranked in all the way!)..

I tried using a solderless connector as a crude tool in vise grips, that failed to grip the adjusting screws well enough, then I tried a piece of 1/4" steel brake tubing with one side flattened a bit with a tap from a hammer--but that just wanted to bind up in the well the screws are located in..

I managed to get the screws to open up about 1/4 turn using the wire connector ,and the thing then started much better and stopped "bogging" when you gave it some throttle, but it kept dying at idle, till I opened the low speed screw some more..then it ran perfect for about 5 minutes, then began bogging out and stalling at idle again..

The fuel lines are intact,no leaks, primer bulb is good too--the fuel filter looks clean, and if you wind it out ,it will run full tilt as long as you want it too,so it is not starving for fuel--I also checked the gas cap,it passes air OK..

I tried dumping the fuel and replacing it with fresh gas & oil mix at the right ratio,it still seemed to not run any better, but at least its useable now..

I told the owner they might try some of the "true fuel" they sell at Lowe's in it,thats already pre-mixed at 40:1...and just run it and see if that improves things any...thing looks like new and it would be a shame to see it get chucked away because of this...

I tend to blame the crap ethanol gas sold here ,I have yet to have any of my 2 strokes run well for long with it..seems like every time I use my chain saw or weed whacker,I have to fiddle with the carb adjustments to get them to run decent--especially if the weather has changed since their last use..
I dislike 2 strokes period, they seem too fussy and never want to run right for long..

But where would one get one of those "special carb adjusting tools" if they wanted one..mower repair shop ?...or anyone have a "home made" one that works ?..

Special tool, I tried taking pictures, it's just too small on the end. I bought the tool for $12, some tool placed wanted as much as $35

Thanks for the link, but I think the Bolens/MTD uses a different tool than that one..
At any rate, its not worth buying the tool, the weed whacker probably is worth less than the tool, even if running good!..
I have had some success getting trimmers to run better by mixing gas and seafoam 50-50 and then mixing it 40-1 with the oil. I run the trimmer for short periods fast and slow and then let it sit a bit. Might need to apply some choke to keep it running. After this I fill with the 40-1 gas/oil and sometimes they run just fine. Some still require a slight carb needle adjustment.

I;m thinking there are at least 4 different screws that these little 2 strokers can have
:dunno:

Amen!
I've never had much luck using electrical connectors either, and with the throw away nature of most of the little 2 stroke engines I'm not interested in buying expensive specialty tools for them.
I always pull out the dremel with a cutoff wheel and cut slots in the screw heads so I can make adjustments with a flat head screwdriver.
