Bolens hard to shift when running.

I have a Bolens with a 12hp Briggs and it's a 5 speed. The shifter is on the right fender and is very hard to shift when running. The belt seemd too tight but adjusted the clutch/brake pedal and no better. It had a 96 inch belt on it and I even tried a 97 but the 97 was too sloppy. It also has all new pullys on the deck. But these are the same size that came off, which has no relation the the drive (clutch) part of it. Any thoughts?

I am not familiar with the model that you are discussing, but it sounds like your clutch is probably not disengaging completely. Can any body else help this guy out?

When the clutch is pushed the idler pulley is moving as far as it can. It just acts like the belt is too short but I tried one 1" longer and then it was too long.

You didn't give a model number so hard to give a good answer but it is possible it uses a 1/2 size belt and just won't work probably with a generic "off the shelf" belt. A lot of the newer tractors use belts of a special design and you can't just throw anything on there and have it work properly.
Good point about the belt. I'll check on the model number. Is there somewhere one can purchase Bolens belts?
I find that most of my machines are hard to shift when I am running.
It is much easier when I am sitting on them.
