Re: Bolens 800 restoration project(taking it appart)

Keep the pics coming! It didn't take ya long to tear her down. I wonder why they drilled all those holes in the frame tubes for?
when I bought it there was a briggs, non original engine in it, so I'm guessing that someone just guessed where to place the new holes for the engine. some of them are not even drilled straight. So I will replace those with a spare set I have, I am also puting in my s-8d engine in it. so it will be original.:thThumbsU

That's awesome. I can't wait to see it finished. We are keeping a close eye on the 800 on ebay and if everything goes well it will be ours <insert evil laugh> LOL.

I want an 800 because I like the looks of the 600, 800 and 900 but I am going to use it as a puller. The driveline is perfect for a puller. I think it would look sweet with some nice size ag's on the back

Re: Bolens 800 restoration project(taking it appart)

Ok, I have powerwashed everything and I am now prepping for sandblasting
(hopefully saturday):praying:
I have a few more ?'s for you guys, I am thinking on using leather brown rustoleum, for the body, it will be lighter than the other I restored, which I had it mixed darker. For the hood fenders, tires , I am planning on using a off-white.
Also should I paint the seat pan red or white???
Every one elses' seat I have seen is white.
Thanks , in advance for any suggestions

Re: Bolens 800 restoration project(taking it appart)

I cant say if its a Bolens seat ,but the one on my 60's Sears Compact 7M looks identical to yours, same color and everything!..but I've seen seats on many brands that looked the same,I think one supplier sold seats to many different brands back in the 60's and 70's..

I liked the veiw of the tranny!..never had to take one apart on a Bolens, usually they never give any trouble..the only thing I didn't like about a friends Bolens was the fact it cant be pushed due to the worm drive in the transaxle--if his had a "release" lever to unlock it like some did,we never found it!..if it stalled,we had to shove a hand truck under the rear end and use it as a dolly to roll it back to the garage--with loaded tires and weights, chains, and a weight box full of sand, that sucked!..

Your doing a great job,I'm no longer into taking anything that far apart unless I've NO choice!..I'm getting lazy as I age, since it dont take much to make my back ache anymore..

Wow I am impressed with the pictures. You really did tear that thing apart. Thank you for the tranny pics. I can't believe how rugged that tranny is. I have a G12 that runs great and now I know why. A guy is coming to buy it for $150.00 as it needs major body work.... Looking forward to more pics!

Re: Bolens 800 restoration project(taking it appart)

Going to buy the paint some time this week, have been busy, so I havent had time to work on her lately, but I will post pics of the progress as soon as I do more work on it. I'm having trouble finding the crome hood piece that goes on it, the old one was broke and bent. I am going to call rays tomorrow and see if they have one. called sams and they dont have one.

Re: Bolens 800 restoration project(taking it appart)

well I'm getting ready to dismantle the wisconsin engine for painting, and ran into a problem finding paint, I was thinking of using a heat resistant paint for the engine, but all my local stores have Black., I have seen some Bolens with the engines painted Black and was wondering what should I paint the 800?
Black or brown???? The last time I used rustoleum to paint the engine (brown) the paint bubbled up due to the heat. any tips??
Thanks, Brian

The only high-heat engine paint I'm familiar with is VHT, and they don't have a brown listed at all.

I can't say about an 800 specifically, but my TRA-10D and TRA-12D engines are both black.

bolens 1000:you should be able to use a good quality automotive paint ,the engine shouldn't get hot enough to burn it off.my 800 has the color gold rather than brown.
