I got a bunch like that this fall when the power company dropped a mess of huge hard maples and red oaks on my property. Some of them were 13 feet around. . . .

Shagbark Hickory that dates to 1780 . .

Looks like a great "Family" day in the woods. Enjoy as many as you can. Speaking from experience, your helpers will all grow up fast.

My X27 came in on Friday and I've already split a good load of wood with it. It is absolutely amazing -- compared to my splitting maul it's like night and day. (I will post some more observations later.)

I am only a bit taller than you and I have no trouble with the X27. Although I am not as proficient as I used to be, I grew up splitting a lot of wood so am comfortable handling axes, mauls, etc. If you are too, I think the X27 is the way to go. The handle is long, but the entire package is much lighter than a typical wood-handled splitting maul -- which makes it very manageable.

I'd say it would be good if you could find a hardware store that has one or better yet, both so you can handle them and make your own decision. I am 5'10", and the x27 is a great fit. I used a 34" handled 6lb maul for more years than I can remember. I like the extra leverage of the longer handle, and you can always choke up a little if necessary. But, at 5'5", I'm just not sure. Unfortunately the x25 is a 28" handle, seems like something in between would fit a lot of folks.
