Best over all

This is a no brand specific question. In alls opinion what was or is the best combination, as in engine transaxle. Either horizontal, Vertical hydro, or geared. Have not done a search on this question, so sorry if I've started a new thread on an old subject.

I favor a horizontal opposed twin with a horizontal shaft and a hydro rear end.

That pretty much describes the Bolens 1886 and the HT18, HT20, and HT23.

There are some other brands that ran the combination as well. They were all the 'high end' of the GT lineup.
My old 120 is still going strong after 45 years. All original, just regular fluid changes. Has a horizontal single (k12), hydro trans (sundstrand) and automotive diff (peerless). Belt drive, cheap and easy to replace. Hope i didn't just curse myself.
