For $2600 he could get a GTS5000 Excellerator from Craftsman. It's a 26 HP Kohler Courage Pro V Twin, Hydro-Gear G730 servicable transmission, 54" deck and the fastest forward ground speed (7.5MPH) of any of the "Box store" type machines.

In that price range I honestly didn't find anything better in my opinion.

Low end of the range - Simplicity Regent

High end of the range - Deere X300

If he'll go as high as 4k take a look at a Simplicity Broadmoore. They are very well built and have automatic traction control. They have the same frame as the Conquest and Prestige models that are in the Yard/Garden tractor class.
Not sure what you're located but Pat's power in Tolland Ct. is a good dealer.

I've been looking at the new little Allis-Chalmers tractor. I don't know that it will do anything but mow but it's a nice little tractor for the money. My local Simplicity dealer sells them for $1799. 23hp briggs and foot controlled hydrostatic drive. We need a new lawn tractor for church and I am telling them they should check this tractor out. The dealer says they are getting nothing but good feedback back from these tractors. People seem to love them. Is there any reason to steer clear of them?

If you're talking Broadmoor, you might as well talk JD X320. But than again, we tend to upsell on this forum quite frequently. :drunkie: At any rate, the Broadmoor and X320 are cut from the same cloth. What the Deere gives up w/ the deck it gains w/ a more capable transmission minus limited slip. Both rigs have GT frames. Kawa vs. Vanguard? Diehards in both camps - I give them a tie.

That's a great price range...

In my opinion, bang for the buck would be Craftsman. But if there is more "buck" to bang with, I would lean towards the Simplicity Broadmoore. That's a really nice machine.

You don't need a GT to get a diff lock.... this may be a limited slip arrangement...
I'm not saying it can't be done.. heck it could be jet powered.... Anything is possible. Just doesn't make sense to put an LSD or a diff lock in a weaker class of transmission, that's all I was getting at.

Ditto!
If your friend never needs ground engaging attachments in that price range, I'd go Simplicity, it's a well-built machine and nothing would beat that striped, manicured lawn...

Heck, I just saw a brand new Conquest with 50" deck and power steering on CL for $4700-. It's a dealer in Torrington I believe. Can't remember the name but if you do a search it'll come up. I know were streching here but that's a smoking deal IMO, with the PS and all.
O now I remember, Goff's is the dealer name. Just don't quote my spelling.

I've got to agree with the Craftsman for the best bang for the buck. Who cares if the hood falls off? You've got a servicable GT transmission, it goes 7.5 mph, kohler engine and with 4k you can get the snowblower and have money left over for some more toys.

It doesn't technically fall off, it just looks like it and sounds like it! :)

I have to second this choice because this is exactly what I bought and I am happy with mine. And the GT-5000 can use ground engaging equipment to. As a matter of fact that is all that I do with mine.
